Robau would have made the opening of TMP even more badass than it already is. V'Ger would have cringed and fled in fear, leaving all three Klingon warships intact.

And just think, if the CGI in 1991 was that good and effective imagine how Praxis blowing up would look now!

TUC. Boom, shockwave, Sulu and the Excelsior, Starfleet briefing the rest of the TOS gang with an explanation and orders. Perfect pacing to get into the story - not too fast (FC's one fake beginning after another), not too slow (GEN - is this a TNG movie or not?)

Honorable mention to the movie of which I normally do not speak. Slusho Trek's attack on the Kelvin was pretty impressive.

Even TFF had a pretty solid beginning and an uncharacteristic one at that. If only the rest of the film had lived up to it, but oh well. Whaddya gonna do.

I really had to have an internal debate between TWOK and ST09. ST09 won out. fantastic beginning. made even better by its spiritual kinship to the TWOK beginning.

I adore TWOK. Always have. It's my second-favorite TREK film to date and an iconic benchmark of my childhood. But TREK '09 simply had a faaaaaaaar better and more exciting opening. No debate there!

Abrams's Star Trek - none of the other Trek films even come close.

Every time I saw the movie in theater, at least some members of the audience were moved to tears by it and that is a good thing - the opening has emotional weight to it.

(Someone will probably come along and post that "people were moved to tears because it was so bad," but that's just juvenile game playing.)

My personal order:

1) TMP -- Still my fave movie, still my fave opening. The opening felt BIG, space felt big and foreboding, and something awe inspiring.

2) Star Trek (2009) -- Strong emotional opening and visually stunning.

3) Star Trek VI -- Just for the Praxis explosion.

4) First Contact -- Not a big lover of the movie, but it had a good opening and in just a couple of minute it added much needed depth to Captain Picard.

The only opening that actually CREEPS ME OUT is the one to TMP. Between the eerie, moody Goldsmith music and the scary Klingon makeup I still get small goosebumps.

I like the opening of The Undiscovered Country the best, it's my favorite of the TOS movies. I actually have yet to see the new movie, I have the DVD, I just need to find time to sit down and watch it.
