Where did the FOOD come from??

An airplane dropped food twice on the island. Dharma initiative supplies...but who sent them?? The Dharma initiative guys are dead on the island, yet whoever sent the supplies obviously knows how to get to the island so why wouldn't they know their peeps are dead???

Yep, it's a puzzler!

I really hope it was deliberately placed in S2 as a head-scratcher to be revisited at some point rather than a scripting fuck up.

One theory I had was that it was Widmore who dropped it. Widmore knows about the Incident and knows that eventually it will end in a hatch that needs a button pushed. He sent Desmond off on that boat race so that he would crash on the island because he needed a replacement to push the button. He sends the supplies every so often to make sure the button-pusher lives.

Of course this theory still leaves a lot of unanswered questions, but it seems to be the most simple and make the most sense to me.

^ Also, the Swan had a modern washing machine. Maybe the Mittelos people have something to do with it...they're the Others' link to the outside, aren't they?

But yeah, Widmore is a likely candidate.

It appeared that Ilana and Bram were part of New Dharma who would have been supplying the button pusher to prevent the black hole from swallowing the planet, but it turns out they're with Jacob. Maybe there still is a New Dharma out there...

One theory was that the air drops came through a 'time flash' or time rift or something and were actually from the past. That would be pretty rad, but why would they need to drop it when they had a working sub?

Hmm. I'm going to say that at the time, the writers hadn't thought of the purge yet (remember that was around the time when Ben first showed up and he was a temporary character at that time, they kept him because Emerson was so good), so the DHARMA initiative was still around in their plans i bet.

The sub probably couldn't take too much food and other supplies. Plus having to cart it over the dock, into a truck and then out to the Swan (and other stations?) is doable but an airdrop near the target might be easier.

I like the idea the drops appeared through a time rift but were there any around that time the drops might have been happening.

Maybe they were merely meant as mysteries at the time and wont be answered. Lockdown was pretty neat anyway. I really love the speaker sounds.

Yah, the food drop doesn't line up with any known facts yet, but I hope they explain it at some point.

Although if you count the "online" stuff as part of the mythology of Lost then Dharma is a big organization and has been around for a long time, on and off, the island with the Island only being part of their whole operation so even the purge wouldn't have slowed them down much.

I think that the food being for the button pushing is a perfectly reasonable explanation for the food drops.

i think i wrote in another thread that according to the official "extra" stuff, Widemore & his people were on the board of the Hanso FOundation, funders of Dharma.

Also, with Ben previously a part of Dharma, perhaps he was able to manipulate it such that Dharma still believes that there are still personnel still on the Island?

Also, i would think the submarine plays into the situation as well....

^I think the horse was Smokey. Or Esau. Or....whatever.

I think the food could be Dharma, not knowing what really happened to their people, sending food for the button pusher. OR, it could be Hurley "making things happen," ala Walt.

I think Dharma is still around in some form and they dropped the food for the two guys manning the Swan station. The Others left that station and the people manning it alone for years after the Purge for some reason.
