What no Arkham City Thread?

Tempted to rename the thread "Batman: Arkham City -- AUGMENTED REALITY FAILED."

The first four challenges (in the area of the cranes, near the beginning of the game) are absolutely crucial, because they give you the grapnel boost, which basically lets you turn the grapnel gun into a turbocharged launcher that shoots you into the sky at high speed for gliding. Comes in particularly handy when you're rushing halfway across the city to find a ringing telephone.

Ah yes. I only attempted one of those phone challenges, and I couldn't get across the city fast enough. This is good to know.

One thing that I really like about this game is that there's so much more than just the main story. My biggest complaint with the first game was that, once the story was done, aside from running around looking for Riddler trophies, there was nothing more to do.

The trick to the AR challenges is learning exactly when to pull out of your dive. If you tilt the stick back right before you pull out, it gives you extra forward momentum that you can use to reach the rings furthest away. I won't lie though, the last four really require you to become a master of gliding. With a little practice (and some hair pulling frustration) you can pull them off.

I stopped bothering after the first four, since completing all of them only gives you an achievement. The grapnel boost upgrade from the first set, though, is just totally essential to playing the game effectively.

Is that why I had such a hard time with the Ra's al Ghul part of the game? That damn section took me forever!

Yeah and then when you get to the phone, there's a dozen or so thugs waiting on you. I was like "C'mon man! Seriously?"

I didn't even know he was in the game. I keep getting derailed from going for Mr. Freeze by all the Riddler side missions.

Haha yeah. See, I found that part unbelievably simple. That's probably because I had spent at least a couple hours trying to do those damn back four AR challenges. I guess once you've done those freaking annoying things, any other gliding challenge would seem like a cake walk.

He's totally not in the game. I made that up. :shifty:

I think I am going to start doing more Riddler missions to prolong the game. I don't want the story to be over yet!

So I finished watching a walk through of Arkham City ( I can't afford a console or else I would be playing it) and without spoiling anything this is just an amazing game. The game play it's self seems remarkable and the story is awesome along with how the various characters are used. I like the fact that Paul Dini establishes that this is it's own continuity, separate from anything else but still manages to pay homage to the films, animated series, and comics. The score is incredible as well. Again manages to homage but also establish it's own musical identity. The end was amazing. There were so many amazing moments in this game. I really wish this was novelized.

No kidding, I did that first set but the second set have been killer.

I like the exploring, using the gadgets, solving riddles and finding trophies but I haven't gotten very far and I'm already tired of "press this button to attack, press that button to counter, and press these two buttons together to do this."
The fighting controls are exactly the same as the first game. There are a few extra combos that have been added this time around, but in general I've found the combat to be pretty much the same. Actually, since I already have the experience from the first game, I've been having a slightly easier time with the fighting.

I found the melee combat a little disappointing this time around. I don't know if it's the scope of the game or because I've played a lot of 3rd Person games lately but I don't like them as much as I remeber from Asylum (which I haven't played since it came out). Someone said the thugs take more blows than they used to so maybe that exposes the tedium?

Speaking of challenging, man has anybody gotten the Riddler Trophy where you have to throw the remote control batarang through a airduct and have to make a hard right turn? Goddamn, I can NOT do that. It's so frustrating to know there's a trophy that I simply don't have the manual dexterity to get.

There's one that was driving me bonkers where I wasted God knows how much time and then I tried for some other one and was doing some goofy shit trying to get another and died only to find out it didn't auto-save my getting that trophy! Luckily it only took a couple of more times now that I had managed to build up my mad skillz LOL.

Picked it up Friday and i like it a lot...
The side missions add some flavour to the game and the free-roam aspect works well...
The inmate banter is also very well done and funny, like when some ask if they can be the rebound guy for Harley if Joker dies...

^ I've found it works really well to mix up working at the side missions and working on the main storyline. The side missions integrate really nicely into the game without feeling as intrusive as other games. Even the riddler trophies feel like more than just gathering stars/coins or whatever.
