Not every member of Starfleet is career Starfleet. Just as not every United States Marine is a career Marine (case in point, my father; he served one tour, working in a supply warehouse at 29 Palms, then accepted an Honorable Discharge, met and married my mother, apprenticed with her father's plumbing shop, and eventually ended up running the plumbing department of the entire Los Angeles Unified School District.
I've been working for the same employer for over two decades, and I find that outside of work, I'm surrounded by people who consider five years too long to be working for the same employer (a result of cockamamie management theories that discourage promoting from within, that are every bit as fallacious and destructive as the notion that a long commute is a good thing).

Spoilers for the S2 finale but I wonder if being captured by the Gorn will have an effect on Sam to the point where he reprioritizes his family over starfleet cause we know he's going to be okay he lives on for another six years.
I'm VERY thankful we didn't get that!
