Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread

I used to have a tape cassette full of Weird Al songs that I had taped off of a friend'a tape cassette. Later that year (I think it was '84 maybe '85) in the Winter my family took a trip to Yosemite and I played that thing constantly on my walkman as we drove from L.A. to Yosemite. I pretty much worse that tape out over the years. i have a few of his CDs now. I really haven't listened to them for a few years now.

My pre-teen son has become a massive Weird Al fan. And while he likes the parody songs, he has a real affection for the originals. When I saw the promo for his currently in progress "Ill Advised" tour, where he plays all/mostly all originals, I couldn't let it pass without giving my boy a chance to experience it. So, we're flying down from Alaska to see the show in Portland in May - seats right down front, meet and greet, the whole enchilada. He's stoked. Best part is, even though he knows about the concert, he does not know about the meet and greet. I am going to spring that on him at the show. Hoping that getting to meet one of his pop culture idols will be a win!

Wow! Where do I nominate you for parent of the year? That's the coolest gift.

Nah - It's not like that. We only go around once in this life, and I've got some regrets regarding bands/musicians I always meant to see, but talked myself out of. I'd like him to have the experience, and be able to share it with him. Not looking for accolades, I just think it's cool I can do it with him.

That's really cool! I could kick myself for not going to see him some years back. He was in my area, but sadly I was busy at the time. Haven't seen him perform anywhere near where I'm at now. Glad that you and your son are getting the chance to see him.

I'm sure he'll have a blast. Let us know what you guys thought of the show! I'm curious what this new tour is like.

When I was in college, I had a friend who looked EXACTLY like Weird Al did at that time (mid 80s). So much so, that he even became a celebrity impersonator of Al. We would go into Westwood with my friend dressed as Weird Al, and us as his entourage. People really believed they were seeing the real Weird Al. To this day, I 'm sure many of them still believe they saw/met Weird Al that night. My friend would do this periodically, and actually ran into the real Weird Al while he was impersonating him. Al's response was cool, and just didn't want him doing anything that could hurt his reputation. He even signed an autograph for my friend, made out "To my evil twin..."
