UNIVERSAL SOLDIER:REGENERATION

I saw the trailer a week or two ago.... it seemd to me to just be a movie where you have old tired out of work actors who need their career restimulated....

That would be Harrison Ford doing another Indiana Jones, Sylvester Stallone doing another Rocky and Rambo, or Eddie Murphy still trying to get Beverly Hills Cop IV off the ground.

That doesn't really apply to making a sequel that was going straight-to-DVD from the start (just ask Wesley Snipes how The Art of War II is doing).

Good God...it looks like an Asylum film.

Asylum's already done their version, with the completely unique and original title "Universal Soldiers."

Oh, wow... I looked it up on Wikipedia and there are really two distinct (but equally dumb, I guess) sequel continuities for Universal Soldier

Universal Soldier (1992) - Jean-Claude Van Damme as Luc Deveraux

Universal Soldier II: Brothers in Arms (1998) - Matt Battaglia as Luc Deveraux
Universal Soldier III: Unfinished Busniess (1998) - Matt Battaglia as Luc Deveraux

Universal Soldier: The Return (1999) - Jean-Claude Van Damme as Luc Deveraux, ignores the two previous movies
Universal Soldier: Regeneration (2010) - Jean-Claude Van Damme as Luc Deveraux, sequel to "The Return", also ignores the events of Universal Soldier II & III

Current IMDb ratings
Universal Soldier: 5.5/10
Universal Soldier II: 2.8
Universal Soldier III: 3.1
The Return: 3.3

I was very surprised that there will be a third movie. There were no commercials, trailers or anything like that.I liked the first movie because of the cyberpunk themes in it.

According to IMDB Regeneration's budget is 14 million, so my expectations are not too high, but I can still give it a try.

damn and I thought JCVD was gonna be his 2nd Renaissance too, he should do another Breakin' movie, Breakin 3: Electric Crunker

The main problem with Van Damme's movies is that in most of them the plot is just a way to justify the fight scenes.

He turned down a chance to be in a theatrical movie with a lot of buzz -- The Expendables. I don't see another JCVD up his sleeve, especially if he's serious about reprising his Bloodsport role.

The screener for this movie is "available." Clearly a straight-to-DVD budgeted movie (higher end, not Asylum) but tons of nostalgia factor for you if you saw the original or at least remember when Van Damme and Lundgren had theatrical releases. A surprising amount of character development for Van Damme's role too, but I guess when you don't have a lot of filming days you can't do a lot of action scenes. Also a homage to Blade Runner that they hit you over the head with.

Actually a budget of 14 million could be sufficient for a relatively decent movie depending on how they are spent. "Equilibrium" was made for 20 million and it looked awesome.

Well it LOOKS straight-to-DVD. The foreign location, populated with actors you've never seen before, and obvious shortcuts the filmmaker was forced to make -- but still above the other straight-to-DVD action flicks that use obvious stock footage from other movies.
