Trekmovie.com book article

I just thought I'd let everyone know Trekmovie.com has a new article that looks back at last years books, and looks forwards to this years books. The section about the upcoming books features a color version of the Shards and Shadows cover and several new tidbits of info about the Destiny trilogy. Apparently this is actually the second article in a new regular column they are doing focused entirely on the books, the first one was all about Captain Kirk's Guide to Women.

It's a nice overview, but, umm... isn't there something missing? Book from July '07, light blue spine, something to do with burial...?

^ They left out the Corps of Engineers series completely, too. While Mere Anarchy and Slings and Arrows were mentioned, there was nothing for COE in eBook or dead-tree form. (And of course mostly they just bitch about the format, because heaven for-bloody-fend that anyone actually discuss the eBook content when there's a perfectly good rant to make about how eBooks suck.... *sigh*)

The article reads as though there's a bias against the trade paperback form. Mirror Universe is pretty much dismissed as something that people bought and talked about, but there's no feedback for it positive or negative.

A second readthrough of the article shows it to be rather shallow overall. It's not a review so much as a reaction to reviews. "People said online they liked this," or "People said online they didn't like this." The writer has a real reaction to Crucible, Errand of Fury, and the TNG relaunch novels, but everywhere else he's devoid of content.

^ Yeah, none of the trades are discussed in depth -- not just the MU books, but Strange New Worlds 10 and The Sky's the Limit are only perfunctory mentions, and, once again, the Corps of Engineers trades are ignored completely. (Me? Bitter? Naaaaaaah....)

Of course, this is the money quote:
While not strictly a part of the Original Series line, David Mack kicked the Star Trek: Vanguard series up a notch with one of the best novels of 2007, "Reap the Whirlwind". Mack’s effort was quite possibly the most notable novel in any of the Star Trek lines last year.
:D

^ You think? Me, I'm looking at a quote later on...

"Q&A" managed to be the shining star for TNG this year. Unlike any print effort this year with Jean-Luc Picard and his crew, "Q&A" was true to the spirit and feel of The Next Generation, while actively developing a new dynamic aboard the Enterprise-E.
Yeah, that's a much better quote. *nodsnodsnods*

:D ;)

Maybe if he'd actually taken the time to talk to some of the writers and editors (I know, they're so hard to find here on the Internets, but still...), he might have found out some things, like why Mere Anarchy and Slings and Arrows were "relegated" to the e-Book format.

I know, I know. That would make sense.

And it's not like the writer of the article is a stranger to these lands. "Robert Lyons" posts here as "Father Rob."

Hello all, Anthony Editor of TrekMovie.com here.

thanks for the feedback. Our coverage of books has been periodic, but we have committed in 2008 to cover them (along with comics and toys/merchandise) as comprehensively as we cover the feature film and the remastered project.

If anyone has any specific feedback then please do let Father Rob or myself know via PM.

I have made a quick update to the story to include a mention of Christopher's book which we did review last year (and gave a good review as well)

I have spoken to KRAD about ebooks...we will try and add coverage in the future, but we will need help in this area.

We are also working with Margaret and Marco and hopefully we will have more previews, scoops, excerpts and giveaways.

Any writers who want to be profiled/interviewed please contact me via PM (or let margaret or marco know...they have my contact info)

And anyone with writing experience who might want to help us with ebooks should also contact me or 'father rob'

And keep coming back...we will have a 'library computer' column on a regular basis from now on. While we catch up on some reviews we missed and other things. I expect for the next couple of months there should be one column per week. We will also be doing 'retro reviews' and retrospectives on Trek's past books.

And, thanks for reading trekmovie.com

If eBooks truely sucked, then we would not have constant "out of stock" on the Sony Reader PRS-500, Amazon Kindle, and Cybook Gen3. Lots of people disagree that eBooks suck and sales of dedicated readers proves this.

Ok, I'm not doubting you, but how can an e-book be "out of stock?"

And since the devices are so popular these days, then my guess is a lot of people don't mind reading eBooks at all. And besides, with these devices, it means they are not tied to the computer which was the #1 complaint for eBooks.
