Spoilers The Ships of Lower Decks

Unlike the Galaxy, which was explicitly built as two ships-in-one, the California seems to have placed everything but Engineering, probably, in the saucer (lots of Ops). I don't think the have a battle bridge, per se, but can probably separate the saucer in order to blow up the warp core (and nacelles) if they need to, with minimal loss of life in a fast emergency, since there's very few officers stationed in that section and probably no living quarters down there.

At first I thought those two dark grey squares on top of the saucer were extensions of the nacelle struts going all the way through the saucer section, but seeing the ship from behind reveals that they actually don't line up.

I wonder what exactly they are, though.

I thought the same thing. I have no idea what those are for. The MSD doesn’t give any clues as to their purpose.

Hard points for...
Weapons, sensors, Winnebagos?

Probably just a sensor thingy. First thought was a navagational deflector like the reliant which this ship was mildly based.

I really like it. Sure, the star drive location isn’t the most logical, but it’s a good, simple, clean lined design that’s instantly recognisable as both Star Trek and its own identity. I’m glad to see design go simple again. The disco ships - some are cool but few have pleasing or identifiable silhouettes. I would love to serve on a California class!

Maybe they are extensions of the struts, but the animation dept. screwed up the shot??
Cause that top pic does seem to indicate such.

Or maybe the struts angle up and out once they enter the primary hull?
(to avoid using up prime space in the center of the hull?)

If the ship is going to launch torpedoes in an adventure, she's lacking in forward surfaces suited for that. The pod down below and these two bumps are the only places where such surfaces aren't covered in portholes or other things that glow all wrong for torp tubes. And while neither the pod nor these bumps actually seem to feature holes we could identify as torp tubes, the pod front end is almost completely taken up by the deflector and has fairly narrow strips of useful frontal real estate otherwise.

Okay, we also have the very top of the saucer, the front of the superstructure - perhaps that grey letterboxish opening there is not a bridge window?
