The Romulan drone ship..

I never heard this... But it kind of makes sense. If people from far uptime, like Daniels, could transport themselves to other times, why would Future Guy have such trouble merely communicating with the past? The only reasonable explanation is that his tech was vastly inferior -- perhaps due to its being created (or stolen and not completely understood) in a time as early as the late 22nd century.

I think it was Berman who said that about Archer being Future Guy when pressed on the topic. I think that was a lame idea and had it been a Romulan that would have been the better idea. Hell he even looked Romulan in his shape.

Actually it was Brannon Braga in a tweet in 2012. I kind of liked the idea. Sure, it would have to be done well, but at least it is an idea. It's better than nothing.

Well, I agree that the idea of Archer being Future Guy has a large number of problems: beginning with why he would have been manipulating the Suliban -- even to the point of providing them with advanced information/technology -- instead of getting in touch with somebody in Starfleet.

Yes. I always thought that maybe Braga was joking when he said Future Guy was Archer. It never made sense to me. Now, if anyone has seen the fan film Horizon, Future Giy was revealed to be Romulan in that movie. And it made much more sense than Archer.

Honestly, I don't think B&B gave Future Guy much thought.

It might have been interesting if Future guy was Mirror Universe Archer, but that couldn't happen for obvious reasons.

Of course, since it would be Archer from several years in the future, it would be pretty simple to fill those years with events that have turned the character into a villain who opposes Earth Starfleet for villainous reasons; a tragic hero who knows that his Starfleet will bring disaster if allowed to proceed unchecked; or a clever double agent who is forced to operate with the Suliban and through a time machine controlled by villains but who still manages to Trojan-horse all sorts of indirect help for his younger self.

Any and all of the above would account for Future Guy looking eccentric and adversarial. Especially #3 is a good catchall excuse: any and all antics by Future Guy could ultimately be argued to be logical parts of his greater plan (that is, whenever he did something obviously contrary to that plan, it was "a clever ploy to distract his enemies"). It would take deliberation, and more than one episode dedicated to retconning, but it could be done easily enough - and it might also be something the Fifth Season writers might have wanted to tackle just for the heck of it.

It's curious that only one writer ever wanted to tackle the issue. But Watching the Clock sort of exhausted the subject once and for all.
