The One Thing You Could Change, TNG Edition...

Have Riker leave for his own command after The Best of Both Worlds. It would give you the opportunity to introduce a new character, either a new XO such as Shelby or a new Ops Chief if you promote Data.

Plus, you can always have Riker pop up a few times thru the end of the run and on DS9 without being married to the Enterprise.

I agree with this. Riker peaked as a character in BoBW and should've moved on from the show.

Just going with a laundry list ...

1) Make Picard gay, I'm serious. We would have gotten a gay main character, at the same time Picard usually wasn't particuarly sexual active so the audience of the mid 1980's would have had a easier time accepting him.

2) Keep Tasha.

3) Make Worf a "general purpose" junior officer, not stuck at the helm and not the security chief either. He would be all over the ship and assigned to away teams too. In order to have him in a scene, it would not be unusual for him to be just about any where.

4) Only a single appearance by Q.

5) New first officer every other season opener. Previous first officer moves on to their first command.

They shouldn't have killed off Tasha Yar. She should have been transferred to another ship and could have showed up in later episodes.

This is a popular and easy answer to go with, and she could have taken Shelby's place in BoBW as a result. Of course, we might not get Sela and "Yesterday's Enterprise" if that happened.

If I had to suggest an original change, it would be that we’d see Cetacean Ops. See how dolphins serving on a starship would work out.

we still could of had tasha in yesterday's enterprise, she just wouldn't have been returning from the dead.

and tasha being alive in the prime universe assigned to another ship wouldn't have precluded sela being the daughter of the yesterdays universe's tasha.

Honestly, I could have lived without the silly Sela plot and actually "Yesterday's Enterprise" too.

How about this:

Have Tasha be Ro. Have her be Bajoran and introduce the whole species and the Cardassians as early as Season 1. It would have added a bit more to Tasha's character.

Of course, we might not get Sela

Considering how badly Sela was handled and how much wasted potential she ended up being....we could live without her.

Only one thing?

If it really has to be only one thing...have them get rid of Harry or Neelix (or both) to make room for Seven and keep Kes on the show instead.

Wrong thread, but yeah. If I could go back in time and change anything but it had to be something Star Trek related, I'd stop them from listing Garrett Wang as one of the sexiest 50 men.

Yes, that’s all true. Although if she still leaves for the Ent-C, she’s still gone from the show.

Recently rewatched TNG and despite knowing the outcome you could still really feel the dread and the gravity of the situation and looking back its sad that we had such a reset after and should have had Riker leave or Picard dead at the end.

But my 1 change if I had one is anything that takes the ships counsellor off the bridge of the ship

okay. how about this.

tasha becomes romantically and sexually attracted to the enterprise-c's first officer castillo. they have sex. castillo isn't human, he's an amphibiosan (futurama), and unbeknowst to tasha becomes pregnant with tasha's children. amphibiosans lay eggs.

tasha stays on the enterprise-d.

castillo is subsequently captured and attracts the attention of a romulan admiral. even though pregnant the admiral takes castillo into his house and even formally adopts castillo and tasha's children after they hatch.

and so sela.

I like TNG, but if there's one thing I could change about it, it would be to have the characters and style of dialogue be more naturalistic and less formal. It's painful watching everyone talk like they are in a radio play.

They sadly didn't have the budget so they scavenged. A shame no other sci-fi shows' costumes were available.

Actually, I know that TNG had some production assets from the "V" miniseries and TV series, so they might have had access to some old Visitor uniforms.

An unsold show like TNG season 1, they were also trying to look big and say "we can do it too!" (Indeed, 11001001 lacks the ship and lounge mask misalignment that SFTF was loaded with...) Or it's homage, since season 1 also has models of NCC-1701A and TOS shuttlecraft in some rooms for no reason. Yet no 1701-B or C (or D!) models anywhere. Show the complete series to flesh out the wider history, or not do it at all. Picard did get 'Stargazer", which was a kitbash of 23rd century era ships... (but the show being untested and all... not until season 4's opener did we see new ship designs, albeit all destroyed...)

The main reason why the producers didn't build more Starfleet ship models was because they didn't want to waste money on them if the show bombed and got cancelled after the first or second season. While I understand that, it's not like that stopped them from building lots of alien ships-of-the-week like the Edo God (which could have been reused as a Federation space station), the Terrellian plague ship, the Talarian freighter, the Straleb ship, and the Pakled ship (all of which were reused again as other alien ships-of-the-week). I'm not quite sure why the added expense of at least one other contemporary starship to the Enterprise-D couldn't also have been built; for example, a new ship to represent the U.S.S. Tsiolkovsky or the U.S.S. Lantree. And the Stargazer model was only built because Greg Jein produced the model on time and under budget; they would have used the TMP Enterprise had that not been the case.

Maybe people talk like that in the future?
