And today is our first ever National Day of Truth and Reconciliation.
A federal holiday, but not all the provincial governments are on board with it yet. Which still seems perverse to me.

I think it should be treated like Remberance Day otherwise it will just be a another holiday and it's point will be overlooked.

I highly recommend people watch Indian Horse which has residential schooling at its core, and it's currently on Netflix.
I don't have Netflix.

As for the provinces... given the racist content of the draft curriculum here - overseen by a bigot who sees reconciliation as a "fad" and wrote a series of disgusting social media posts when the unmarked graves were found in BC - I doubt Jason Kenney would ever go along with any formal recognition of this day.

Last year the Minister of Gutting Public Education (other names for her include the Monster of Education, or she's also referred to as "Umbridge" as she bears a scary resemblance to the Harry Potter character) made a show of wearing an orange shirt. This year... she's been in hiding. Her last press conference was in August, and she and Kenney made a fake video welcoming the kids back to school. It's fake, because it shows the sun shining, and the real weather that day was cloudy and raining all day.

So who knows where she is?

I suspect that, at least here in Ontario, the next time we end up with a Liberal (or NDP) government, it will probably end up being made a provincial holiday.

This part was weird to me though:

Ontario Government: We're not making it a provincial holiday.
Also Ontario Government: We're giving the Ontario civil servants the day off, though.

I think it should be treated like Remberance Day otherwise it will just be a another holiday and it's point will be overlooked.

Some provinces do get Remembrance Day as a holiday, though. As far as Remembrance Day goes, I feel that treating it as just another workday as we do (in Ontario) leads to it being overlooked. Since we were working from home last year, I was able to tune into the ceremony from Ottawa, whereas normally I can't attend anything, virtually or otherwise. If you really want to commemorate and honour a group of people, just pausing your work for a grand total of 60 seconds seems... underwhelming.

That being said, my company actually had an event for National Day of Truth and Reconciliation today, so that was appreciated.

I'm not comfortable with the way we've handled Remembrance in Ontario.
I always watch the Parliament Hill ceremony, and have for so many years that there were still WWI vets taking part. I've never attended the local ceremonies.

I do recall my jaw literally dropping in surprise the first time the French chaplain acknowledged that not everyone prays (but it was still a polite way of saying, be quiet while we pray). This happened when Harper was still PM, so that's why it surprised me.

Somebody from LaGrange's office did finally post something about Truth and Reconciliation Day, and I got an email telling me to wear an orange shirt. The photo of LaGrange in her orange shirt, standing in front of some indigenous art on the wall was actually taken last year (one of the regular posters on her FB page dug up the previous year's post to prove that).

Annoying. He is literally the only Canadian I've heard who perpetuates those ridiculous speech affectations.

Yep, agreed. He tends to perpetuate the stereotypes, and does it in such a way that is so denigrating. You get the distinct impression that he doesn't want to be in Canada. I suspect much of it is an act though, part of his identity as a Youtuber, to be as annoying as possible.

A much better Youtuber IMHO, is this guy. He has an American friend and they frequently compare things and go on adventures together.

What do you guys feel about J.J. McCullough, a Canadian youtuber ?

I have no opinion either way, as I have never heard of them before. (Although now I feel a bit out of touch, because it seems everyone else has... :alienblush:)

My favourite Canadian (or just generally, really) Youtubers are Ryan George and Julie Nolke. Which I guess makes sense, since their schticks are so similar! ;) )

Seems like our prime minister decided to prove your point for you.

Very disappointed in him, again. You would think he would have been a little more concerned about the optics, after having just won an election. On the other hand... maybe that's precisely why he didn't care.

So we ended up invoking the 1977 Transit Pipelines Treaty as part of the dispute with Michigan over Line 5. Curious to see where this goes... these types of things don't always seem to end up working out in our favour.

I thought our relations with the US were supposed to *improve* now that Biden was president...

Canada invokes 1977 pipeline treaty with U.S. to prevent Line 5 shutdown

Except it's more a a conflict between Canada and a U.S state as it's a governor that's pushing to get the pipeline shutdown but perhaps enbridge should have been looking to replace or upgrade the pipeline (and they had better not go looking for a tax payer handout in this situation).

I can see where witmer is coming from. If the pipe bursts it's going to be tax payers hit first for the clean up costs.

Though I expect the oil industry and Alberta are going to be pushing hard over pipelines etc with oil prices up and the expectation we could see $100 a barrel prices during the winter.

From what I've read, the diplomats have been trying to get the Biden administration to intervene without requiring us to formally invoke the treaty provisions, and have been roundly ignored. And it may be a single state driving it, but they are basically abrogating a treaty signed in good faith by both federal governments.

but perhaps enbridge should have been looking to replace or upgrade the pipeline

That is their plan. They want to basically bury/encase the pipeline so that if there is a spill, it won't get into the waterway.

I can see where witmer is coming from.

Definitely. If there ever was a spill, it would be an ecological nightmare.

What bothers me is that we're trying to extricate ourselves as a species from having an oil industry on the scale that we've allowed to exist up to now. And this Line 5 fight is going on as a way of slowing down that progress.

I come back to this conclusion: we cannot have an oil industry without it continually trying to destroy everything that matters to us.

Different aspect of Canadian life to discuss: I worry about the Pandemic-induced income supports being dismantled. It's too soon, and it's the wrong way to deal with the transition to a post-Pandemic economic life.
