The Global Football Thread

Naturally the 1986 semi-final is featuring on the news. That incredible first goal, followed by the non-goal... I dunno. He was an absolutely brilliant footballer who had no need to do that, yet he did. Yes, it was a world cup SF, the stakes were high, but when you're that good you can win a game by legitimate means - as the first goal demonstrated. And for a lot of people, that non-goal is the thing he'll be remembered for.

Leaving that aside, 60 is far too young. RIP.

Honestly surprised he made it to 60 given the insane lifestyle, but the guy was an absolute legend on the pitch

I watched a documentary on him last year (think it was on HBO?) and it portrayed him as a very sympathetic individual that was taken advantage of in many ways by the people around him, quite sad actually

Not selected in 1978 because Menotti thought him too young
Kicked off the park in 1982 when he stood out a mile in an average Argentina team
Won the World Cup almost single handedly in 1986, he was at his peak
1990, he was already showing signs of wear and tear but he still had some touches in a very workmanlike team who lost the plot in the Final mostly due to Germany's ridiculous diving escapades
1994, overweight, made a comeback, scores sublime goal, gets done for drugs............sad, but his own fault.
Watched some footage of him on Spanish TV the other night from his time at Barcelona
He was kicked from pillar to post but still had amazing ability
A legend of the game, perhaps on a level of his own.

Boxing Day football all day on NBCSN today and tomorrow. A Premier League junkie's favorite two days of the year.

Premier League is infested with too many positive corona cases..... And the virus mutates. Up to now, most of the players and athletes from other sports recovered from their infection. Wolverhampton Wanderers sends staff to go shopping in supermarkets for the players. They don't want their players to get infected there. Well, the standard citizen can't afford to avoid supermarkets....By the way, supermarkets aren't the only place to get infected.

Barcelona are in serious trouble of actually going bankrupt :wtf: BARCELONA.

The headline on Tuesday's Marca front page could barely have made it any clearer. WITHOUT FUNDS. Barcelona are, for want of a better word, absolutely skint. There's nothing there. Just a husk where their finances used to be.

New financial reports show that Barca's debt stands a staggering £1.1billion. Rampant overspending and poor financial management which had put them in such a weak position before Covid hit. Barca posted a post-tax loss of £88million for the 2019/20 season, with the slashing of wages unable to save them from huge overall debts of £433million.

The new figures have swelled those numbers even further, with £648million of that £1.1billion figure due to be paid back soon, 'urgently' say some sources. The banks also want £236million by the end of June. Also coming by the end of June should be the first of Barca's two 2021 wage payouts, as they follow their usual model of paying the squad six months' worth of wages twice a year.

Except they haven't paid all of December 2020's money yet, with that shortfall expected to be made up next month. Although just how they do that is anyone's guess. La Liga aren't happy with the wages either, as Barca are currently spending some 74 per cent of their revenue on the current playing squad, above the league's mandated 70 per cent.

Transfer spending that gets very close to £1billion in five years is a major part of the problem, with Barca left owing money to several clubs across Europe and the world through staggered payments. Liverpool, Ajax and Bordeaux are three of those clubs, with all three expecting payments by June 30. Although reports on this vary, the Reds are still owed something between £25million and £35million from the sale of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona in January 2018.

Player wages are still too high as the virus continues to rage. Then there are no fans allowed. A financial disaster for all the teams including Barcelona.

Bundesliga - 41 goals this season. Congratulations .

A forgettable season for me (as an Arsenal fan) so I'm happy to start concentrating on the upcoming Euros just as soon as the two remaining European club finals are done.

Very likely the only time in my life I'll ever be glad Chelski won a game of football. :p

Either outcome would have been awful but at least Chelsea was clearly the better team the whole way through. City looked lost the whole time.

Messi leaves Barcelona and with that I imagine they might end up being a Europa League team for several years. PSG seems to be the favourite and i'm not surprised because he was never going to play in the EPL.

One thing I admire about Ronaldo is he's played in England, Spain and Italy with success.

Hard to imagine him playing anywhere but Barca, but there it is. Barca's former president made their bed and now everyone associated with the club has to lie in it for the foreseeable future.

Being Australian I get to watch and appreciate - to a greater or (very much lesser) lesser extent - four different codes that call themselves "football". Messi is by some distance the greatest footballer of any description I've ever seen. Whether or not he's played in the EPL is completely irrelevant. He has nothing to prove to anyone, anywhere.

The Premiership is probably the toughest league, but it doesn't produce the best football, it's not conducive to it.

As you said, Messi has nothing to prove and he certainly doesn't need to play in the U.K.
