I hope this one will be the "serious" one. In EX1 they were trying to see if the formula works, but couldn't quite get the ball rolling because of budget and schedules. In Expendables 2 budget and schedules weren't that big a problem anymore, and was all about celebrating the 80s action stars. Everyone basically played the persona they are remembered for. Chuck Norris jokes, Terminator I'll be back jokes, all that stuff.
Now that they a) showed that the formula works and b) had their fun, I hope that Expendables 3 invests a lot in good characters and a good story.
In that regard I also hope the film is at least 120 minutes long. Expendables 2 was WAY too short, which showed especially in the last act when all the characters appear completely out of nowhere. And Van Damme, the main bad guy, didn't get much screentime.
