The Casting for Captain Pike

When they casted the role of captain pike, the role went to bruce springwood. the person who should have got it should have been ray liotta he looks just like the original capt pike

I'd say Liotta looks only somewhat like the original Captain Pike (Jeffrey Hunter), but either way, I don't care. Bruce Greenwood was great. I could not ask for a better Pike.

Thank god it didn't go to Liotta.

I think Greenwood was an excellent choice and I couldn't care less if he looks like Hunter or not.

Liotta's still living large on all that Operation: Dumbo Drop money.

Joe, livin'

Unfortunately he doesn't project a Pike-like presence.

I'm glad they picked Bruce Greenwood...he had the perfect attitude and presence imo.

I met Bruce just a couple of weeks ago at work and complimented him on his performance as Kennedy in "13 days" I also did the same for his work on "Star Trek." He said of Star Trek: "I had so much fun doing that."

Yeah, honestly, if they give out Oscars for best casting, Star Trek deserves to be a serious contender. They more or less hit it right out of the park with every single important character, it's sort of frighteningly good in that regard.

Bruce Greenwood as Captain Pike is one of many excellent calls. Hell, I'm going to be rewatching "The Cage" soon, and the pertinent question to me now is: Who's the better Pike? Greenwood may just have that mantle, I'll see.

I can take or leave BG as Captain Pike. While I've only seen the film maybe 1 1/2 times (going to remedy that once I get the movie from Amazon) he really didn't stand out much. Other than vague snippets of him floating about in my head, I distinctly remember his wet hair while he's being supported by Kirk on the transporter pad. O.o Oh and the wheelchair at the end.

Liotta is a one-note actor and hasn't looked a thing like Jeffrey Hunter in more than a decade. Can we all just let it go, please?

I just have to say this cuz it drives me nuts: "casted" is not a word!!!! (It's "cast".)

OK.

Onward.

I love Bruce Greenwood as an actor and I also love Ray Liotta's work.

But I think BG was an inspired choice for Pike - he brought tremendous authority and personality to the role. Just note perfect. Not saying LIotta couldn't have done it, 'though I'm not sure his particular kind of intensity would've been quite as effective. In any case, BG is a perfect Pike as far as I'm concerned. So good, I will noe always see him as the character.

Casting is about much more than just "looks" or resemebling a character physically, much less resembling another actor who previously played a role. it's about all the intangibles that an actor brings to the role to truly inhabit a character and bring it to life. BG certainly succeeded in XI.

Greenwood was phenomenal in Exotica and The Sweet Hereafter. Liotta was phenomenal in Something Wild and Goodfellas. If you haven't seen them in these movies, you can't talk the talk.

Oh, and Liotta has appeared in a movie with Captain Kirk aka Chris Pine already - 2006's Smokin' Aces.

Bruce Greenwood was excellent in this role. To tell you the truth I was concerned when I first heard that Pike was going to be in this film thinking he would appear as a second-rate captain compared to Kirk. But I was wrong he was well-written and extremly well played

I like Jeffrey Hunter's Pike much better. Somehow I just don't see Greenwood doing an impressive "Is your blood red like ours? I'm gonna find out!!!"

Odd, I thought McCoy was horribly cast.

No way....Karl Urban absolutely NAILED McCoy. Not an exact impersonation of De Kelly but he sure channeled "the spirit" of McCoy! :techman:

I thought he was probably the best actor cast with regards to being true to the character.

I would have liked to see Greenwood kick a little bit of ass while he was taken hostage. Knock a few heads together, break a few noses, give him a little of Jeff Hunter's "attitude" as Pike. Greenwood seemed a bit too easy going.
