The Best DS9 Model Kit

Sorry if I'm posting this in the wrong section of the board. I didn't see a specific place for Star Trek Merchandise. If I am posting this in the wrong section, Moderators, please feel free to move this. Basically, I've been looking to buy a DS9 station model for a while, but I know there's a few different types of models out there. I was curious to see if anyone had any recommendations on the best DS9 model kit you've come across that I'm still likely to find on Ebay, Amazon or whatever.

Please and thank you! :)

I have two left hands when it comes to model building, so thank God there's the Eaglemoss Official Starships collection! They had a beautiful DS9 model as their first special. You can get it at their shop here. Or on ebay. Here's a YouTube review by IrishTrekkie taking a closer look at the model, which is quite heavy and super detailed.

You might get more responses over in the Fan Art forum. I can move this thread over there if you like.

There's only really one model kit, it was available with and without lights. It's a bit of a sod to get together, more of a sod to paint nicely. I regret my teenage self threw it out.
The eaglemoss one is probably the best, though not as detailed as it could be for the size and price.

It's not really fan art, model kits are a different thing.

I disagree. Anyone can glue parts together, but it takes artistic talent to produce a realistic looking scale model. All the conversations I've ever seen on the BBS involving scale models have taken place in the fan art forum.

Having said that, I am happy to leave this topic in the DS9 forum if that is what the OP wants. I just think you would get more feedback in the art forum.

You're the mod woth more experience of the forum than I.
Fanart is generally a different thing in my experience, and I only half disagree on the distinction between model making and art in general, I suppose it is closer to Fanart than general art. The best modellers I know are also artists, but conversely I can think of many who are not. As you say...anyone can glue something together.

I built THIS one a long time ago. It got smashed by accident, only a couple pieces of it remained intact. I miss it so much.

OP, if that is the one you are thinking of getting my advice is to scoop one up, and provide a link to where you found them. lol

Hopefully we'll get some good input from our talented modellers here in the Fan Art forum.

There is also the model for the Star Trek Attack Wing table-top game. Their DS9 is about a foot or so across, which makes it double or so the size of the Eaglemoss model and smaller than the old AMT/ERTL kit. And it is pre-painted and already assembled. It does come with a bunch of stuff for the playing of the game (cards for stats and upgrades, cardboard tokens) and has an MSRP of around 100USD, though you can find it for less on-line. It also has the advantage of being the biggest model of the subject currently in production. Here's a link to the manufacturer's site:

If you do go after the older AMT kit, you'll probably spend more on it. Besides the time and trouble to actually build and paint the thing. But if you are interested in the actual building-it-yourself aspect then that's the only option.

Wow, that looks to be an awesome model! Thanks for the heads-up. Might want to get this for myself.

By the way, is the game itself any good?

You're welcome!

As for the game itself, I don't know as I've never played it. But its central game mechanic is based on the Star Wars licensed X-Wing Miniatures Game, which I play regularly and I would say it's great. I've heard good things about the Trek version, though.

And it's not quite a card game, either. The game hinges on the positions of the models and lots of dice rolling. The cards define and modify the rules for the ships themselves.

The main reason why I haven't embraced the Trek version of the game is that the models are not in scale with each other, while most of the Star Wars ships are. But, hey, give it a try! Like I said, I've heard a lot of good things.

Sorry for just now asking this, but was there any difference in the two AMT models (the one with lights and the one without) besides the fact the working lights? Basically, would one be recommendable over the other?

No difference....I think the lit one was fibre optic, and came with a drill so you can make the Windows.

Thanks for the info. Now I have to decide if the lights are worth the trouble and probably higher price tag.

I am likely going to use the new ranges of glow in the dark acrylics to light my Voyager kit. It's significantly easier and cheaper. With the Ds9 kit, whichever is easiest to get your hands on, unless you are going to be too tempted to actually put the lights in if you have them. Otherwise, it's the same kit, just don't build the lights in. There's nice reference shots for panel lines in the 'Making of Deep Space Nine' books by the way. And maybe some freeze frames from the Birthright TNG episode on BluRay.

The dark acrylics sound an interesting way to go. I just can't decide if the lights are worth it. They're an awesome detail, but since this would be my first real model kit construction, I just don't know if I want the trouble. This is what happens when you give me options. I pull my hair out trying to decide.
