Stargate

I just found this thread. I watched a random SG1 episode here and there in syndication when it was on late night on the weekends. I didn't really get into it until around season 7 and SGA near the beginning and then worked backwards. I have a tough time saying which I'd like more. SGU was difficult to watch, I think I gave up at one point and then caught up later. A binge rewatch a couple years ago and reading the comic made me appreciate it more. I'd agree SGU needs to be binged. I've probably binged both SG1 and SGA twice all the way through in the past 5 years.

I didn't care for the Ori. I didn't like the religion in DS9 nor in SG1. I think SG1 and to some degree Star Trek have helped shape and reinforce my views of religion. I like how some Star Wars fans have identified as Jedi for their religion. Firefly has Browncoats. Star Trek has Trekkers or Trekkies. I'm not sure what a Stargate fan would identify as. An ancient? Something with ascension to an afterlife...

I hated the overuse of the 'human' replicators. I was sorry to see Weir go.

So O'Neil with one L is the original movie character? Why did I not know that!

Origins was a disappointment, maybe more-so that it was a string of short episodes. I'll have to rewatch it as one show.

I hope there will be a new show someday.

A gater? Not sure it matters. Isn't part of Stargate looking out for new life and exploring it?

My view of the afterlife has no bearing on my view on alien life.

One L. No sense of humor ;)

O'Neill two L's has a great sense of humor!

Alien life wouldn't alter my views, just reinforce them if anything.

I don't think that Stargate really had a religion, it just disproved them...at least some of them. It was more about older mythology/religion vs. taking on anything today. I'm not sure how well that would go over.

However, I think ascension did reinforce belief in an afterlife and potentially more of a peer group than a god.

What if like you earlier said, Jesus ascended, but along the lines of what the Ancients are like?

I mean, the Ori went very close to Christianity, specifically the Catholic Church. Stargate struck me as far more of a gnostic point of view, the idea that there is secret knowledge that keeps humanity from achieving its true potential. The idea that the material plan is more an inhibition than a support of human growth. But, that's just my lay person's view.

Now that I think of it, I do recall the parallels. I just like to forget those seasons, except for Cam and Vala. I'd agree with your view on it's point of view.

I enjoy the 'what ifs' that the show presents.

I think the later seasons sadly struggled with the same idea of mixing in mythology like it had done before, or even from the original film.

I find O'Neill grating, flippant and overly childish for the most part. He had moments but I tend to skip Jack heavy episodes (and the clip shows) on rewatches.

My reason for not liking the Ori has more to do with being overpowered.

Starting with Anubis Stargate became all about trying to find some artifact before the enemy did because the enemy was established way too strong for any other tactics. It worked with Lost City then became repetitive.

I the Ori were too nebulous to be an effective enemy. So, you have the Priors and the Orici but it is so ill defined as to leave the danger both overpowered and yet uncertain all at the same time.

They also lacked any kind of depth--thematic, conceptual, or otherwise. Shallow were the Ori.

They just seemed like a cheap attempt to cash in on the growing popularity of poking fun of fundamentalism in the late naughts. But lacked the sophistication needed for something like that. Part what made the show great was its cheese, which was fine for the Gua'uld as the allegory there was much brooder and abstract. And, yeah, the Ori was just too damn powerful.

But that's okay. Mobius is a much better finale than most skiffy shows ever get.

Yeah, apparently Amanda has been asked to come back and be in the series, and direct a few episodes by I belive Mr Wright. But still early days, no word on the show, decision was probably delayed due to covid, and Canada still being locked down tighter than a snare drum.

MARTIN
Stupid focus groups! They hate the ending! I have to think of something new.

O'NEILL
They could go fishing!

MARTIN
Fishing?

O'NEILL
Yeah, it would be the perfect ending. I mean, after that, anything else would seem…pointless.

Amanda Tapping has clarified that she was talking about a conversation that happened some time ago, and has no knowledge of the current state of the revival.

"Oh my god! I hate that this is even a story. Once again folks, there is no new series that I know of. Yes there was talk quite a while back but it didn’t materialize. On my AMA last Saturday it was brought up. But I, in no way, said it was happening. I’m sorry to disappoint."

Moebius is the finale to me. The gu'ald are beaten, the replicators are beaten, they do the full circle thing and end up with the four of them fishing. There was really no need for a repilot.

Agree. Mobius is a great finale.

You probably already know this but S9 and S10 were originally supposed to be a new spin off series called Stargate Command. So yeah, Mobius was originally planned as the finale. But then they decided at the last minute not to do Stargate Command and instead just continue SG1 for more seasons. So Mobius was no longer the last episode anymore.

Some news. New video game and more talk of a new series

Definitely intrigued by the RTS format. I wonder if that means it will like Command & Conquer? I hope it is good.

It would be super cool IMO if there were multiple maps all connected (via the stargate) so you could send units from one map to another by sending them through the stargate. Although it might be hard for the player to manage units on different maps at the same time.

Less cool but they could have one map and you play on that map and when you complete the objectives, you send your units through the stargate, which launches the next mission on the next map. They could do the famous wormhole shot from the show as an interlude in between missions. You could have a nice campaign where you complete different missions on different maps.

More's the pity, unfortunately. I think Ben Browder could have helmed his own series no problem.
