I went into this with a pretty open mind. I suspected that this was going to be "Mission Impossible meets Star Trek," with all sorts of crazy twists and turns, fistfights, and lots of stuff being blown up. I guess because I didn't set the bar very high, I wasn't really disappointed. I do think this movie was something of a test to see if a Star Trek story could work without Starfleet officers and a nice shiny hero ship. I didn't think the movie was great by any means, but I thought it was a fun but forgettable sci-fi action flick that didn't take itself too seriously...

damn you guys are brutal. I'm feeling tempted to defend this turd, just to be contrarian.

Yes it's bad. The worst possible choice for a streaming movie they could have made.

Buuuut. It could have been so much worse. It could have been overly emotional, darkly lit stuff filmed in grey corridors. Or it could have been the same plot stretched out over 10 episodes, which would have been unbearable. It could have been way more boring.

In fact, I think this film is exactly in line with what I expected from the DIS/PIC era of the Trek franchise - to a "T" - and I really don't see how it's seen as so much worse than these two.

The phase phight is a nice idea, but it brings up the classic question why nothing falls through the floors :D
And how does her heel get stuck in the wall, but is fine again after?
Thanks for posting this. I kept rewinding hoping to get a better look!

I can see a STV assault phaser and a TOS phaser, but what's that to the left of the latter?

I don't agree, but I'm done arguing about DSC and PIC. The former last summer (except for when that whole Canon Thing from LD came up), the latter right around before the Holiday Season.

As far as S31: If I'm still arguing about it after today, something's wrong with me. So, it probably really will be "forgettable" after I finish getting this whole thing out of my system.

I thought it was fine. You can see where it would've went as a series and you could see the edges of the cost-containment for sure. It's going to be ripe for mass-hating regardless of its quality like most things because it's not a fastball right down the middle of what 'everyone' wants.

I would've rather seen something more Starfleet 'lost era' post-Star Trek VI but pre-TNG but it is what it is. Garrett was fine but it could've been any character in that role. The actress was fine enough.

Instead of subjecting myself to this admittedly tempting dumpster fire, I might watch Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon for the first time tonight.

If I do succumb to temptation though, I'm thinking pot cake and vodka. If I'm going to waste 90 minutes on it, I want to be laughing my ass off.

Something I'll also be watching for the first time.

Good idea. That's what I should've done. Minus the pot. I don't do that. But vodka? Now you're talking!

NewTrek (for me)

1- Lower Decks
2- Prodigy
3- Strange New Worlds
4- Picard
.........
10- Short Treks/Discovery
..........
20- Section 31

Yes, I know there aren't 20 shows...

"Crouching Tiger hidden dragon" is fantastic!
However I have been a Michelle Yeoh fan ever since as a teenager I saw "Tomorrow never dies"

For me this movie's main sin is that it feels exactly like the kinds of boring straight to streaming movies that have one big name in them that can you find untold hundreds of across the streaming world.

There's just nothing interesting here, not even anything really stupid. I'd rather have a bonkers crazy bad like a Night in Sickbay that at least makes me feel something. I don't think this movie even did anything interesting or stupid enough to generate the level of outrage and fandom flames that most people were expecting from it in the first place.
It put in me in mind of those more recent Bruce Willis films. You've got your big name, and the rest of it just rides the coat tails.

I feel like it would've worked better as a limited series, because like you say, you can tell it has that format in mind.

Georgiou and Garrett were too friendly and huggy in what seemed like hours. There was just no time for it to breathe.

Plus, we might've seen more lost era Starfleet.
