Finished the rest of this:
  • I still say this is still very Star Trek. Very average, sometimes downright shitty Star Trek, but Star Trek nonetheless
  • Zeph and Mille's deaths were unsurprising
  • I will admit I was actually a little surprised that Fuzz was the mole
  • The action sequences were a little too frenetic for my tastes
  • There were a few funny moments
  • I actually like the crew once you got rid of Zeph, Mille and Fuzz
  • San being alive? I mean, how cliche can we get?
  • "Chaos is my friends with benefits." :D
  • Looks like they borrowed the flamethrowers from Disco for this production and got some mileage out of them
  • Phillipa's win against San was a way too quick and ultimately way too easy
  • I'm not usually a starship fan but it would have been nice to see a Terran ship or two through the passageway
So yeah, it was okay. Definitely not something I'm going to revisit anytime soon. I think this would have definitely worked better as a miniseries. Maybe 4-6 episodes, given a little more to the cast to do to help flesh out the way too quick introductions and conflict that only kinda went anywhere and gave it a little room to breathe. Ten episodes would definitely be too much. But its not as terrible as some reviews are saying. I think the 5 I gave it upthread holds.
Agreed with your assessment, but you’re definitely a lot kinder on it than I. I just couldn’t give it better than a 1.

I ended up rating it a three. I thought it was ass, but Michelle Yeoh's performance upgraded it by a point for me, and there were enough interesting choices in terms of visual design (if not direction) that it didn't seem a total waste to me there either.

PIC S2 had the "Confederation of Earth", not the Terran Empire. And Q built it, so it didn't need to make any more sense than his Sherwood Forest did.
"Yesterday's Enterprise" is also strictly not a mirror universe episode, since it's simply A mirror universe/parallel timeline, not THE mirror universe.

But. Yeah. Essentially they are. It's the same concept. Just a different package.

I think you got the timeline wrong.

You are wrong. I'm right.

She was originally in Section 31 in the 2250s and then apparently tried it again in the 2330s before giving up.

You are making stuff up now.

I want to be fair and say that it didn't say that it's only been a few years since they lost contact, it just said they lost contact with her after a few years.

That said, that San didn't appreciably age in the 60-some years between the pre-DIS era and this movie (which is supposed to be Lost Era) suggests a fuckup somewhere along the way in terms of continuity.

My guess is that San was always supposed to be involved somehow in the original season arc pitch. It's a name that Bo Yeon Kim and Erika Lippoldt came up with, dropping in Terra Firma in Discovery's third season. Though for some reason, I got the impression there San was her son, not an ex-lover.

Regardless, at some point it was decided that this was going to be Lost Era, so they added Rachel Garrett, but the two drafts were never fully reconciled. Or maybe there was some line about San being in cryosleep for decades which was cut in the final version.

So how bad was it?
I feel like this was only made because she won an Oscar, completely forgetting that her character was awful.
Shoud have done one with Lorca.

I've only watched the first 15 minutes or so, mainly because it was during a break from work. I will finish watching it so I can make informed opinions, but just that 15 minutes didn't really make me want to finish watching it. For Star Trek, that's really saying something. Even Season 2 of Picard had some things here and there that made for good moments. Not seeing it here so far.

I caught the movie last night. I was sufficiently entertained, which was all I really wanted. It was everything I've come to expect from years of streaming-exclusive movies.

Some random thoughts:

Lots of cliches, but I didn't mind so much. Except maybe for the slow-mo explosion.

I've been wanting a cloak-and-dagger Trek movie for ages. This scratched that itch. Yes, maybe it should have been some other organization besides Section 31 since the depiction of S31 doesn't match the original concept as depicted in DS9 and ENT. But, for better or worse, it's right in line with CBS-Trek's version of s31 already established in ST-Disco.

A few memorable one-liners, such as "Starfleet, where fun goes to die."

I thought it was odd for the Terran Empire to select the next Emperor based on an organized Hunger Games-style tournament with lots of contestants from across the Empire. You would think that a ruling dynasty already had a line of succession laid out, and/or that a new ruler would take power by killing/deposing the previous ruler. Maybe there was some weird situation where the whole ruling house was wiped out in a freak "accident" or something, leaving a power vacuum with no clear successor, and various factions in the Empire were at a stalemate and agreed to a contest to determine the new Emperor.

It would have been better as a more developed story spread over a handful of episodes.
