Gwyn did have a bit of "Sith Lord's apprentice" thing going on, with the cape but also with her sword (not too mention, following her father's orders). Though she was also shown having a very caring side right from the start, and had joined the good guys already by episode 5.
And the series did start on a slave/mining colony. But that wasn't a bad thing, they were drawing the contrast between their starting situation and where they were going (the Federation). It's this setup that is one of the reasons Prodigy's story arc work so well (along with the more complex villains and background situation).
