"With a disabled protostar, they will try to set off by using it as a sail in the heart of a Tachion storm which would allow them to harvest enough energy reserves to reactivate the reactors." - Cygnus-X1.Net

What is this show, and why is it incredibly AWESOME. Holy Crap this might actually get into my top 3 rankings of all of Star Trek. I haven't this much fun in a day in a long time. Netflix gave me an early Birthday Gift (Birthday is on Wednesday) and it was well worth it. I just spent maybe 6 hours today watching Star Trek and having a blast. I haven't been able to say that much in the new era.

Brilliant conclusion to the two-parter.

Another unexpected cameo from Bev Crusher this time, and I enjoyed her concern of not seeing Wesley for a while, whilst at the same time knowing that he'd be fine.

Seeing Chakotay talk about his history of trying to find his place his whole life was bittersweet.

Love the Protostar sailing with a sail shaped liked the Starfleet insignia. Made me wish I was young so I could really feel a sense of wonder from watching it.

Ckakotay kind of made joining the Maquis sound like a teenage rebellion, which is funny since I'm pretty sure he was already a high ranking Starfleet officer when he defected.

Half expected to see a kid Jack Crusher running around in the background when Bev was talking to Janeway.

MA has him as a twenty year veteran when he joined the Maquis. I doubt his rank was any higher than Commander. Not sure if that's "high ranking" since you have Captains and several Admiral ranks above him. He's in the middle rank wise.

Wel he definitely wasn't a teenager. (He started his story to Dal with "when I was your age..." then skipped a couple of decades to joining the Maquis...it doesn't matter really.)

It was good to see yet another legacy Trek character, Dr. Beverly Crusher, on this episode. Her brief appearance pays homage to ST: Picard and Nemesis.

Just a minor nitpick. How does a Federation starship with the mass of a 21st-century Earth mega cruiseship (or a super carrier) float or fly - with a sail - through the atmosphere? The only possible explanation I can think of is that this is a low-gravity world, thus the presence of giant flying eel-like creatures. It reminded me of an episode of Netflix's Lost in Space.

Other than that, it was still a good episode. It gave more depth to Chakotay's character as he survived day to day, for an entire decade, stranded on a remote planet with only a holographic companion aboard a flightless vessel.

It’s not an atmosphere. Janeway calls it a high-density vaporous ocean.

This was a fantastic 2 parter.
Seconded. I actually liked it better than the mid season finale, the previous two parter. Wonderful images, a strange but original world, excellent character beats and well paced. And I think pretty much everything was build on existing star trek lore or on what happened before in this show.

Well done serial writing can be very rewarding. And that is the case here. It was extra rewarding to see holo Janeway again.

It may not be easy watching for younger children though, after the rapidfire exposition and events of the mid-season finale, the high body count and now a body, even if it is a bird.

Another enjoyable episode. I do feel bad for Chakotay, having spent 7 years in the Delta Quadrant and now 10 years marooned on a planet, with the latter entirely because of the gang's actions.. I'm curious what they do with him.

It was fun seeing Crusher (again, since she was in season 1) but while I think the animators do a really good job with most of the legacy character's models, I couldn't tell that was supposed to be Crusher if the show didn't tell me. I don't think it looks anything like her. It does make me wish they saved Wesley's cameo for season 3 with his mother rather than that bizarre scene in season 2.
