News Star Trek: Discovery Season Two: The Red Angel

I'm not sure that I'm convinced that we will even see another Kelvinverse film.

I think if it starts to look like it won't be out by Summer 2021, they won't make it at all. Just way too much time would've passed. Since the quickest it would take to make would be two years (and that would be a rush job), I think the first half of 2019 is do or die.

Well this is sounding like very untypically structured season. Perhaps these seven signals might represent different "interpretations" of message and therefore these science/religion ideological approaches? Might be interesting start to actual "Discovery" theme of the show.

In light of the Picard Series, DSC will be moving closer to TNG, if anything.

Most of the influences from the Kelvin Films have been shed or are being shed:
  • Bald Klingons being the biggest influence on DSC, since a hairless one was the most prominent one in ID. With Season 2, that's going to be a thing of the past.
  • The approach DSC took in updating the Enterprise couldn't be more different from the 2009 film's approach. The Enterprise in DSC looks like an intermediate step between the NX-01 and the TMP Refit. The Enterprise in the JJ Abrams films, while still recognizable, is very much its own thing.
  • From the beginning, DSC was said to take place in the Prime Timeline, and the reboot now came to be referred to as the Kelvin Timeline. So now those films are off on their own island.

The influences that are being kept look to be:
  • Not shying away from present-day pop culture.
  • The bridges having a front window.
  • Having a faster pace and more action.
Otherwise, over time, Discovery and the Abrams Films are going to keep moving further and further apart from each other. I don't see them coming together and merging into one. Legalities or not.

The red matter came, with Spock, and Nero, from the Prime universe. I reckon the supposition is right, and the red matter/angel signals, combined with the map or other universes from S1 tie everything mostly together.

What elements from present day pop culture are in the show?

They played a twenty year old remix of a forty year old song last season. It’s stretching present day a tad. Mind you, it’s possibly more up to date that the KT, if musically more suspect. At least the beasties name drop Spock. Presumably Intergalactic doesn’t exist in the KT.

Ah ok. I had totally forgotten about that.

Yeah, I kind of have to stretch it. I think they're trying to stick with stuff that's proven the test of time and might have a shot of still being listened to a few hundred years from now. I'm not expecting them to play anything from Bruno Mars or Taylor Swift just yet.

Really looking forward to it.
And I still can't shake Babylon 5 out of my mind when it comes to this "Red Angel".

I think someone just fancied it, and it was cheaper than licensing the Bee Gees track. It’s a one hit wonder version from the late nineties, early 2ks after all.

Besides "Spock's Bong", I want to see something like this in Season 2...
