Star trek: Continues Fan Series

Hey everyone. I only recently discovered this series that is currently in production. Star Trek: Continues. I'm not sure if anyone has posted this before. It's a continuation of TOS, in a similar vein to Phase II. According to their site the first full episode begins filming in January 2013. Chris Doohan, son of James Doohan, is playing Scotty, Mythbuster's Grant Imahara is Mr Sulu, and Vic Mignogna, voice actor on various anime and other works, is playing Captain James T Kirk.

The people at trekmovie probably explain it better than I.

There's a couple of vignettes that they have released that can be viewed on vimeo or on their website.

What I love is that they absolutely nail the look of the Original series. The lighting, the camera angles, the way the actors are positioned in the frame, everything.

There's also a cast interview here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=cvG3MqSJLDM

Appy-polly-loggies if something about this has been posted before, I couldn't find a thread about it though.

That thread is no longer active, having last been used in March 2012. Capt Pickirk's new thread on this great series is quite welcome as is their production.

My friend Larry Nemececk is playing Doctor McCoy as the other actor was unavailable. He even shaved his beard for the role (now that is commitment!).

I did a couple panels with Larry this past year at the Las Vegas con and I wish Larry well!

Thanks. I hadn't seen two of those videos nor the cast interview. Great stuff.

They shared this photo before Christmas and John Broughton asked the question: "Whatcha guys think? A crossover film with STC and Starship Farragut that takes place during the Wrath of Khan (WOK)-era?"

I for one would love this! I'm a huge fan of the movie era, and surely a Farragut/Continues crossover proper HAS to happen now both productions are in motion. A 'Star Trek II.V" or whatever would be great! It would be a change fron the usual TOS era productions.

The only thing they'd have to do is somehow find upgraded sets, but being someone who watched the movies long before The Original Series itself (which was actually started by New Voyages!!), I love the aesthetic.

There were a few TMP era productions in motion but have not been heard from for a while. Project Potemkin is still ongoing, but what about USS Hathaway or Lexington? The audio show 'Grissom' is very good.

I am sure that was not a serious question, but more for fun. There is no way they can afford to create totally new sets. As it was, it took a multi-millionaire bank rolling the facility to get those great sets done.

And this is why everyone does TOS fan films and not movie era/TNG era. The sets are too expensive to build. Recreating 1960's TV sets is easy since they are pretty simple. Heck, there are THREE TOS bridges in the US now. There are ZERO other era sets.

On time back in late 2005 Larry had shaved his beard off, and I picked on him for it, tell him him he needs the beard! LOL'

Well when the Ent-D bridge project gets done there could be some filming on that perhaps.

project: Potemkin has a late TMP era bridge, just replace the graphics, maybe swap out the helm / nav console for a TNG era equivlent, and there you go.

I see what you mean - the main TNG era series use primarilly greenscreen (though Intrepid have converted their basement into a ready room and make use of the hills/mountains/caves around them)

A German fanfilm, Das Vermachtnis, built only a partial Enterprise-D bridge and shuttle, but they were both taken down after a period.

This British fan film built a smaller 24th Century bridge but I get what you mean - the TOS sets are easier to create in a fuller style.

Certainly building movie-era sets that are as faithful as the sets that STC and STNV and Exeter created for the TOS era would be tremendously expensive. No one has done that.

Which doesn't rule out doing a convincing movie-era crossover. It would simply have to be written so that most of it takes place on locations other than the Starfleet ships.

NV did a great job of evoking the movie bridge design for the Excelsior in "World Enough And Time" - they built essential elements of the set for a couple of angles, shot it carefully and then enhanced it considerably with CG. With careful planning and effort STC and Farragut could do something similar for one or two important ship-bound scenes.

When Exeter was first being done ("The Savage Empire") and then a few years later Farragut produced "The Captaincy," I was struck that the economics of doing a fan film were about the reverse of doing a Trek series at Paramount: ie, it was cheaper and easier to shoot on location than to outfit a studio and build sets.

Very much true. The construction plans for our corridors are estimated to be around $3,000, just for 24 feet of corridor. Economics being what they are, we're scaling back our plans. It's the same sort of choice we've made all along with our bridge, ready room, transporter room, uniforms, etc.

Filming on location is far cheaper and easier by far. Other than catering for the cast, there's not much in the way of other expenses for filming on location.

The commonplace use of 'planet' scenes and location is one of the things I enjoy about fan films.

Alien planets aren't undoable - be it in a quarry, national park or local caves, or even historic tourist atttraction (Kitumba??)

I think with low low budget filmmaking it's about taking what you've got/can do or make and adding a big dose of imagination.
