Okay: Funny Wal-Mart/Trek book story that happened just this morning.
My mother and I went to the nearby Ginormous Wal-Mart to do some quick grocery/baby essential shopping. This is the one in Lee's Summit that carries Trek books. I hit the book aisle to see what they had, and a lady was stocking books at the same time. I stopped in front of the science fiction section (That's right, they have a whole section...four feet across, all shelves filled) and she was happy to tell me that she'd just finished loading up that area of the aisle. Among the titles were the newest Trek book releases, and I grabbed a copy of
A Burning House (you're welcome, Keith!). Since the lady and I were already talking, I mentioned this discussion, and she was happy to tell me that Trek books sell pretty gosh-darned well here, thanks very much.
As we were walking away, my mother -- who likes to give me shit as is her right -- asked, "So, how come they don't have any of your books?" and I explained that they do when my/our stuff is new, and that the next time something might show up here is in the fall. The lady working the book aisle comes running back to us, having overheard my mom, and asks me, "You're an author?" And of course my mother took over at this point, having been handed an opportunity to brag on her son. Once all that was out of the way, the lady asked if I was interested in doing a signing. As it happens, she's not just someone stocking the shelves, she's also involved with the store's promotion/PR/customer relations/etc. Apparently this store does this on occasion with other writers as well as musicians/etc. who come through the area on scheduled tours. Learn something new every day, I guess.
(I really should just hire my mother as my PR rep.)
Anyway, there you go.
