Spoilers STAR TREK BEYOND

Frankly I think there is too much of a glut of comic book / superhero movies at the moment. I'm kind of over it and feeling meh at all the recent movie titles.

Has the perceived popularity of geek culture ruined original movies?

If you're a comic book or super-hero fan, enjoy it while it lasts. If you're not, just sit it out and wait for whatever the new fad is. In the '50s and '60s, westerns were the craze. '00 and '10s, we have super-heroes. Eventually, the super-hero movie craze will wear down and Hollywood will move on to milk something else. :)

Agreed. Though I have to admit that reality TV has hung on far, far longer than I thought it would. Anyhoo, I'm excited because sci-fi/fantasy is making a comeback, and as a nerd myself, I can't wait to see what they come up with next!

Nah, you're seeing that through the eyes of a fan. The average person doesn't pay any nevermind to that save for noticing it when it comes up on the big screen at the start of the movie. To them, a superhero movie is a superhero movie. Batman v Superman is exactly the same as Captain America: Civil War in the same way that any two rom coms, period pieces, or comedies are the same.

I'm seeing this through the eyes of someone who does this sort of thing for a living.

From the eyes of a fan is the complete opposite: Only they're allowed in the club and no one else can be as special as them or know what they know. Which is so incredibly far from reality in this day and age.

I doubt these posters are pieces of the official one, and I doubt the official poster will have any 'troika', even if it would make sense for the first movies.

The art guys at paramount put Uhura (and the alien lady) because, maybe, unlike some people they remember this trek isn't about 3-4 dudes, even if one of them is the writer and possibly made his character bigger at the expense of other things, and if you gotta 'attract' people like marketing is supposed to, the choice between putting all dudes versus some dudes and some pretty lady might be obvious, regardless of the effective screentime.

I'm surprised by the lack of attention Elba is getting, though. He is popular and they should take advantage of his fanbase more. With Benedict, it got so extra that I was almost bored by his villain without even watching the movie.

Well, I certainly hope there be more meaningful roles for the supporting cast and women.

Not just 'Hailing frequencies open Captain'.

It's great that we have a female guest star with what appears to be a leading role, in the character of Jaylah.

It's great that we have a female head of the federation, even if it's for a cameo.

Rumours of Bone's ex-wife and / or daughter; and a female Starfleet Captain don't appear to have panned out. At least we've not heard anything yet.
