Space Battleship Yamato 2202

The Popynica version is indeeed very pretty. But this is big, beautiful and at $20USD equivalent, impossible to say no to. :)

And it came MIB - didn't look like it was ever taken out of the box, and as with most things you'd find second-hand in Japan it's practically pristine (it simply wouldn't sell otherwise). Mine is a later version which comes with a light-up WMG feature in the nose, but without the giant WMG controller prop that was apparently sold separately or bundled. Either way, not complaining!

What can we piece together from these images and what is known about the time period and the older 1978 film and series?

Kodai appears to be in command of an old style battleship of the Kongo-class, which is likely now a small ship, since it is roughly equivalent to a Gamilas cruiser. The Kirishima's captain (who was captain of the Yamato in the film "Be Forever, Yamato") is seen, but I can't define were he is aside that he seems to be in a spaceship's chair. I think he might have been promoted to Admiral since he was likely the only remaining full captain in the fleet, at the end of the war. There appears to be a Gamilas observer at Earth HQ. Yuki is back to her old job. Kodai appears to be witnessing the power of a wave motion gun from the outside (likely used against a large Cometine battleship). This might be his first encounter with Andromeda or one of the other new Earth warships that has a wave motion gun (against the treaty with Iscandar). But if there is a Gamilas observer, they know about the wave motion guns already, so its fine. The character notes say that Kodai is part of a combined Frontier Fleet with the Gamilas Navy, so we should expect to see more Earth and Gamilas ships working together this series, though also the chance of a vengeful Gamilas commander being assigned to hunt down a rogue Yamato, who won't take a recall order seriously over his vengeance.

Also Andromeda is larger than Yamato...there is a picture of the two together for the advanced ticket sales. the perspective is weird, but she should be upwards of 400 meters long to Yamato's 333 meters long.

So far this is the standard that remakes should be held to in Hollywood.

From the past, we didn't get confirmation that the Yamato 2199 BD has English subtitles until about a month before the first theater release. Hopefully the same will happen, though it is possible they will attempt to swing a Star Blazers 2202 release with subtitles instead to capture that market earlier rather than delaying it a year or two and not having that many sales because most people bought it direct from Japan the year before.

Also Yamato2202.net updated with more images of the ships and profiles for more characters. http://yamato2202.net/character_mechanic/

So that's what a combined Earth-Gamilas Fleet looks like. I am impressed a bit. Three of the massive Gamilas fleet battleships and older style Earth ships with American names on them.

Also the Anti-matter missile cruiser gets its redesign out there for us to see mixed in with the movie versions of Gatlantis' destroyers and cruisers.

Waiting for a longer trailer...one with more ships in it. That or just the ten or so minute preview off Bandai Channel like they had with all the other releases. (Followed by a month or so wait for the BD to come out for everyone else).

My kingdom for a Bandai-America or Bandai-International channel. Or at least they could take all the ESPN's from my warm, alive hands.

Oooooooohhhh....

Andromeda....

Funny how there is a ship so iconic - probably more so than Yamato herself - that anyone watching this trailer who sees that first scene with the twin WMG's knows exactly what it is without seeing the ship itself. And in case you didn't catch it the first time, they throw in a stunningly bad-ass silhouette shot at the end.

And of course, it's quite amusing that the massive Gamilas super-battleship looks like it's the first to get squashed with the White Comet onslaught. I guess they thought that little "wall" (?) with the Gam logo in front of the ship would protect them?

Brilliantly done - This new season is going to rock!

The blew up the Sugarloaf. Bastards.

I wonder if the wall actually did stop the Magnaflame gun from completely destroying the Gamilas fleet battleship (First random thought..."Activate wall, Dessler protects" (Gamilas armor is best in the universe....)

I imagine the battle will be the opening ten minutes or so of the new series, much like the Battle of Pluto was the opening for the first one. If nothing else it would make for an impressive preview on Bandai Channel just prior to the episodes coming out.

BRAND NEW TRAILER

Man I REALLY the Japanese Blu-Rays have the same format as before (IE they include English subtitles)...This is looking VERY good.

I preordered the first Blu-Ray for Yamato 2202 from Amazon.jp tonight. Was about $60 USD. Still don't know if it will have subtitles or not, but I am going to get the first disc regardless as soon as possible (expected to be delivered around the 27th of March).

Despite seeing the subtle refinements to the Andromeda I am glad it is at a glance unchanged from it's 1975 version. What particularly interesting is despite this being a redo of Yamato 2 they chose to take a Arriverderci tack to the Saraba and Zodar character designs. Suggests there is interest in seeing these characters brought back in their original Arrivederci flavor. Perhaps giving them a wilder, wreckless, unstable and more uncivilized and dangerous edge?
