Welcome, welcome, welcome to July’s 228th Trek BBS Fan Art Forum Challenge!

This month’s theme — as voted by the community here — is a short and sweet prompt:
Not Good Enough
Art inspired by unpopular episodes.

To get you started, here’s a good list of some of the Trek episodes most frequently cited as “The Worst of Star Trek”. I’m looking forward to see everyone's entries!

The Rules
  • the artwork you submit should be created during the month of the challenge
  • only one final image can be submitted (although it may contain multiple views)
  • your final entry should be posted in this thread (although dedicated WIP threads are appreciated)
The winner gets to sport our brand new golden “Fan Art Challenge Winner” badge on their profile for the following month and has the honor of hosting the next challenge. You can help to decide on next month’s theme here.

You have until Wednesday, July 31st to share your final entry in this thread. If you have any questions or if you need more time, just let us know in this thread. :)

Good luck and have fun! I'm looking forward to your ideas!

I've been on a bit of a Lego kick lately! This was created using mecabricks.com, with their in-browser HDRI lighting (the actual renderer seems to be broken right now, plus I'd have to pay for that). The only post-processing I did was add the insignia to Kirk and McCoy.

It won't make any difference considering the two brilliant entries so far, but can I have another 18-24 hours to finish mine, please? (I didn't get a chance to do so yesterday or today) Thanks

Definitely! I’m also still trying to find time to finish working on my entry. Let’s check back tomorrow and see where we stand with our respective submissions, alright? :)

Very happy to see all these wonderful entries! And I have to apologize (once again) for taking so damn long for mine. I feel like I’m doing worse and worse with keeping these deadlines (which, ironically, in this case I myself had set). But sometimes it’s really tough to find the time I need to really work on an idea. Thankfully I did find time this weekend and I want to thank you all for your patience.

For my entry I focussed on the classic Deep Space Nine episode “Move Along Home”, which despite consistently being named as one of the worst episodes of Trek in general and Deep Space Nine in particular, I actually really enjoy. As for the style: Since forever I wanted to give 1-bit pixelart a try and so I’m happy I finally got to do that for this one. Funnily enough, it’s challenging and freeing at the same time. Challenging because you have to find ways to simplify shapes and ideas. But also freeing, because you often don’t have to add much to imply a lot. One pixel can make all the difference. And the minimalistic aspect really forces you to focus on light and darkness and shape and form. It’s a ton of fun to create and I hope to do more works in this style in the future. What do y’all think?

Since it’s already in the middle of the night, I’m just going to post the voting thread tomorrow. If there's still anyone working on something, here’s your last chance. :)

Oh wow, amazing! Looking at that image I can almost hear the tinny sound effects from a handheld console. You have created the whole game, right? I want to click play.

I agree with you about the episode too, @Michael, the "inside the game" scenes may be a little cheesy, but the Quark storyline makes up for that by far, imo.

Thank you! I so badly want to press play on this as well. I imagine the main game is some weird platformer where you jump through the stages … err … chaps of the virtual game world. And the “Allamaraine” minigame is obviously some sort of rhythm game playing the song as a tinny chiptune.

And yep, the episode is cheesy as heck, but that’s what I love about it. Ultimately it’s without any sort of consequence, but it’s so funny how seriously they take it almost until the end.

Voting thread is about to go up in a minute. Link will appear here.

It looks great, @Michael! The "MOVE" game pieces don't look dissimilar to the actual episode props, and Quark and Falow look amazing! Especially Falow :bolian:
