Series 7 FINALLY Starts Shooting

That's what I thought, DW used to be on Sunday, so we could watch it on the 2nd, but by putting it on Saturdays now, we'll have to wait for a week.

Remember that photo from AOTD that supposedly showed two Amys in it?

Much like the non-River Song woman in the Western episode, turns out not to be the case.

Also, there's a new interview with Moffat in SFX that features gems like him admitting that the hype about "All The Daleks Ever Returning!" was just to get publicity and they're actually not a major part of the episode. He also seems to be getting ready to defend Chibnall in advance by saying that DOAS is just a bit of fun and not meant to be taken seriously.

Does that young lass appear to have a blue-white light glowing beneath her bangs? Now, it could be just a lens flare (Abrams strikes again!) but it's almost like she has a forehead mounted cyber-"eye", rather like Davros.

Sincerely,

Bill

In the latest issue of SFX, Moffat has revealed he will not be bringing back characters like The Rani

http://doctorwhotv.co.uk/why-moffat-will-not-bring-back-the-rani-38157.htm

He elaborated: “It has to be self-explanatory, it has to be free-standing, it has to be clear for everybody. If I did the Meddling Monk teaming up with Mavic Chen’s daughter and the Krotons then yeah, that’s too much, because no one gives a toss.

He added: “People always ask me “Do you want to bring back the Rani?” No one knows who the Rani is. They all know who the Master is, they know Daleks, they probably know who Davros is, but they don’t know who the Rani is, so there’s no point in bringing her back. If there’s a line it’s probably somewhere there.”"

I see where he's coming from, and I mostly agree with him, but in my opinion, nostalgia is not and in fact, should not be the only reason to bring back characters. It's not completely impossible to imagine that someone would want to bring back the Rani because he thinks he could write a fun and interesting story about the character, even though most people have never heard of her.

Davros' Daughter?

Given Moffat's record on what he says vs what happens, this guarantees that the Rani is in this season... (Diana Rigg, then?)

Nah, Moffat says "Thing X" will happen and then it doesn't, not the other way round.

e.g. "One of these characters will really, honestly die! (Not really, suckers!)" "We're bringing back all the Daleks ever! (For two minutes in the background.)"

Plus (for once) he's right. In a world where DWM sells less than 30,000 copies the number of people who want to see any of those characters return is an utterly miniscule part of the audience.

Sure, that are clamoring for it. But, that dismisses who might enjoy meeting the character, if done in a way that appeals to the veiwers, IMHO, of course

Yeah I'm sure they could come up with a good story, but it would still only be a handful of diehard fans who would care or get excited about her being the Rani.

Most would just be scratching their heads wondering what the fuss was all about. So in that case might as well save some energy and use that story for a new character instead.

All true, but then RTD said the same about the Master...

Personally I think if she never turns up, it'll be twenty billion years too soon...

She's an evil Time Lord scientist. People would get excited about that.

I was going to make the point about RTD myself. Honestly, it seems like a bad idea for a showrunner to say "We're never going to have _______" on the show. All you're doing is depriving potential writers of a possible story idea.

As far as I'm concerned, I'd be glad to have her back. Seems as if its just as easy to bring back an old character as it is to create a new one from scratch. In any case, considering how she was handled in the past, she'd need a completely new introduction to make her tolerable anyway.

Given that he's not interested in bringing back anything from as recently as the RTD-era*, (not even the character whose introductory story he wrote) any hopes that he'll bring back specific characters (as opposed to alien races) from the Original Series seems pretty pointless to me.

And he's been pretty clear since long before the series even came back that he considers the introduction of the Time Lords the worst mistake the Original Series made, so I wouldn't be holding my breath waiting for any others (except the Master) to show up while he's in charge.

***

TBH I'm surprised that people are more engaged in this issue than by his admission that the hype for AOTD that's been going on for months doesn't actually reflect what the actual episode is in any real way.

*The Ood only returned as a cost saving measure.

My understanding was that the lack of Captain Jack was because of scheduling issues, not that he's not interested in bringing anything back from the RTD era.

Rule 1: Moffat lies.

No desire to bring anything back?

I must have hallucinated Rose, Marth and Donna in Let's Kill Hitler...

Oh yeah, and RIVER!
