Season 3 uniforms

Jaespol

Captain
How come only the main cast had the new uniform whereas the rest of the cast were wearing the old season 2 uniform hmmm?

Cost. The new uniforms cost about three-grand a piece, iirc, not to mention the early variations they went through in the first few season three episodes before nailing down the design.

Robert Blackman came up with an "in-universe" explanation that the new duds were for senior officers not junior officers, or some such thing.

As off as it sounds, thank God the uniform from the first two seasons was doing Stewart's back in, because the 3-7 uniforms were a vast improvement.

I'm glad you mentioned the early season 3 variations. Not many people seem to realise (or if they do, comment) that.

There were variations in later seasons as well, including one with a front zipper.

Then there's Ensign Ro's uniform, complete with an invisible front zipper and backup comminator badge hidden underneath. :)

No! No! No! :brickwall: I may sound like a a raving lunatic around these parts for saying it, but I hear this assertion over and over again and I'm going to defend those uniforms every time I do! I may be the only one here (or anywhere in the world) who believes this, but I SO think the season 1 and 2 uniforms are better! I love that stripe at the top, I think they look more futuristic, I hate the collar in the re-designed uniforms, and I hate the awkward way they are designed at the bottom, which causes Riker and Picard to have to pull them down all the time. Season 1 and 2 uniforms rule! :nyah::crazy:

^
Nooo, they looked like pyjamas. And having crew members pulling their tops down is as much a part of Star Trek as ships called Enterprise.

I thought I liked them but rewatching the episode, they are really starting to annoy me, they always bunch up and the actors always have to pull them down.

it's the real Picard Maneuver :D
whenever I have to adjust my shirt it makes me think of Picard standing up to talk to somebody on the viewscreen

What exactly were the early-season 3 variations? I've never noticed them.

There are parallel seams running up the front that weren't there later. (I'm not sure if they have a technical term or not!)

I personally prefer the seams, I think they make the jacket look much smarter.

The combadge has no explanation, but how Ro peeled off her uniform was how it was "supposed to work." We weren't supposed to see/notice the zipper-seam in the backs of the uniform.

The idea is that by the 23rd century the zipper is obsolete and some "other" form of seamless clothing fastner had been invented.

In the TOS uniforms the zipper was more cleverly hidden in shoulder details, but it seems the TNG uniforms didn't have it so easy so we had the zipper seam in the back.

But it wasn't "supposed to be there." The uniforms in the reality of the seires fastened with a futuristic seamless fastener in the front and Ro beautifuly demonstates this for us in her introductory episode. Further, it would then seem that the female uniform variant somehow seamlessly blends in with the under-jumper as it always seems like the ladies' uniforms are a one-piece to the men's two-piece uniform.

I now leave you with the image of Picard, Riker, Geordi and all of the male Starfleet officers wearing a gray one-piece jumper under their uniform tunics. Enjoy. ;)

I personally prefer the seams, I think they make the jacket look much smarter.

Moreover, the first run jackets didn't have the spandex waistband that the latter versions had. The original intention was to try as much as possible to keep the illusion that the uniform was still a one-piece like the Theiss unis.

Also, Beverly wore a two-piece then switched to a one-piece jumper w/back zipper in "Who Watches the Watchers."

The front zipper jumpers were modifications of the season 1 & 2 uniforms used mostly for background players.

The elastic waistband is the fugliest thing I've ever seen, especially how it shines in bright light.
