Saw Wrath of Khan for the first time today...

So, my roommate's boyfried made me watch Wrath of Khan... I actually didn't find it that interesting. I still love TNG way more than TOS. I'm more familiar with those characters. Of course it didn't help matters that my mom's old college friend called me near the end to say she and her husband would be at the game on Saturday, but I still tried to focus on the movie.

Still, it wasn't particularly interesting.

I must say, K-Star, that my estimation of your cognitive abilities increased by a factor of about a hundred in the half second it took me to read this sentence. Very well done!

There'll only be an angry mob if you can't explain why you didn't like it. ;)

What the fuck is there to explain? It is effectively like asking somebody to expound in detail upon the manifold reasons why he or she doesn't like to accidentally step in a pile of fresh dogshit.

Truth be told, I don't think TWOK holds up like it once did. Then again, I never understood why people love it like they do. I enjoy it, but I think there are plenty of movies that are a lot better.

I couldn't even see that many similarities to Nemesis (which I really didn't like, btw, but mostly because Data died) like everyone says there are. I discussed this with my roommate's boyfriend and he kept trying to point out how similar they were and I'm like "Eh, the relationship between Kirk and Khan is different than the relationship between Picard and Shinzon. It's really not that similar."

I did laugh when Kirk shouted "KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!" though, but only because that's classic and I've seen too many YTMNDs.

I guess you missed the part where this was a discussion board. "That movie sucked" doesn't lend itself to discussion nearly as much as "That movie sucked because..."

Not that you've ever suffered from a shortage of reasons why you think The Wrath of Khan is the creative equivalent of Bennett, Meyer, and Nimoy taking turns ass-raping Roddenberry in a dark alley. ;)

Who cares!

Yippy! TOS-R is being trashed, now TWOK.

:applause:

The only Star Trek movie that is any good is still Galaxy Quest.

But...

I watch the TOS movies because of the characters.

The TOS movies are still above and beyond TNG's.

Careful TGT, K-Star hasn't said what he/she thought of TMP...

You had to be made to watch The Wrath of Fucking Khan?! Quick, cast her out!

:p

Seriously though, what's the deal? I know it's not everyone's cup of tea but you're one of the first (if not the first) Trek fan I've ever seen express a 'meh' opinion about it on first viewing.

Well,it's not crime to not be interested in TOS.

Probably due to the difficulty in watching it to begin with. It's easier on TV because of the comparatively interesting BurgerKing commercials...

I can see her point TWOK used to be my favorite in late 80s when i was teenager, However when i got older, wiser and more critic. I found reference to Hornblower/Moby Dick/Shakespeare to much and nothing to do with sci-fi genre and Star Trek. TWOK was basically Moby Dick in space

and nothing to do with sci-fi genre and Star Trek.

Trek has always borrowed from those things they are as much a part of Trek as the name Enterprise is, it really isn't or hasn't ever been about "sci-fi" in the "Blade Runner" sense as you seem to mean it - "Conscious of the King" springs to mind - Shakespeare, hell ToS even borrowed ideas from WWII movies - "Balance of Terror".

Many many ToS eps are at best reworked allegories and not "high science".

I have no opinions on TMP because I've never seen TMP (oh, wait... was that the one with V'Ger? I saw the end of it. It was at least interesting enough to keep me watching but still...) Again, I'm not big on TOS. I'm definitely more of a TNG fan.

The movie DID have some nice moments, like seeing what the Genesis thing was capable of, and of course I still like Kirk shouting "KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!!!!!" Heck, even my roommate knew about that quote and we both yelled it together! It was also interesting hearing some of the quotes I've seen on here and then realizing where they came from.

Still, I didn't find the movie that interesting overall. I didn't get some things and had to have my roommate's boyfriend explain, and there was a good chunk of it interrupted by that phone call. I think they'd entered the nebula when she called and when she was done Spock was about to go kill himself (which I was also very "meh" about because I knew he was going to come back.)

^Yeah, Spock's death loses some of its emotional impact if you know going in that he'll return for the next four movies and a two-part TNG episode. But in 1982, it was quite shocking, and kept people excited about the next film, because they honestly didn't know what might happen next.
