Reed doesn’t grant Hayes his dying request.

LOL!!!! So I’m watching Enterprise and Hayes tells read to “use McKenzie” on his deathbed. Reed then goes to get three Macos and doesn’t ask for McKenzie!! Savage, Reed didn’t give the guy his last professional request

Hayes's meant for McKenzie to be his replacement as MACO commander. Though even that is an odd request given we know of at least one other MACO who outranked her, Sgt. Kemper. Unless we're to deduce Kemper died offscreen?

I find it unlikely that Hayes was the only officer in the entire MACO detachment. There should have been at least one other (most likely a 1LT) serving under his command.

In my headcanon, it was Balthazar Edison, who got a battlefield commission as an officer after Hayes' death and took over command of NX-01's MACOS.

I mean, we know - as per STB - that Edison fought against the Xindi. Therefore, he must have been on the Enterprise, since it was the only Earth Starfleet ship that was involved in that conflict.

Hayes could not have been the only officer in the Enterprise's MACO detachment. There should have been at least one other (most likely a 1LT) as his second in command.
With the exceptions of Hayes and Kemper all the MACOs were referenced in dialogue as being Corporals, though a few wear the rank insignia of a Private. There's definitely no indication of any other officers besides Hayes. Not even in the novels.

Edison was referred to (in STB) as a former MACO officer, was he not?

And like I said, he must have been on the Enterprise, since no other Starfleet ship took part in the Xindi conflict.

So either Edison was always an officer or he got a battlefield promotion.

Yes, Edison was a Major, but there is no direct reference to him actually fighting the Xindi, he just talks about how he fought for humanity and that millions died in war with the Xindi and Romulans. Indeed, here's the actual line:
EDISON: I fought for humanity! Lost millions to the Xindi and Romulan Wars. And for what? For the Federation to sit me in a captain's chair and break bread with the enemy.
Nothing there actually indicates he personally fought the Xindi himself.

Speaking of Edison, something in that speech gives me the idea that he had ties to the Terra Prime movement. Smacks of xenophobia.

And believe me, as someone who really hates it when people bust out the "____phobia" at the drop of a hat, it takes a lot to get me to make that leap.

It makes me wonder why he didn't just refuse the commission, retire and go do something else. Nobody forced Edison to do anything.

If I had to guess, it's because he wasn't that upset about it when it actually happened. Only after everything that has happened to him a tiny ember of resentment grew and grew until he became the person we see in STB.

Well, yeah, of course Edison was xenophobic. That's the whole point of the character.

That said, I doubt he had ties with Terra Prime. If he had, he'd likely have been discharged from the MACOs once that organization was revealed as a terrorist organization. Meaning he wouldn't have had the chance to fight the Romulans or become a Starfleet officer (a Captain no less) after the MACOs were disbanded.

Agreed, I think getting marooned on Altamid and having things fester for eighty years was largely responsible for what he became.

While Enterprise went into the Expanse, there's no reason to think the Xindi didn't send some ships out to harass Earth to weaken Starfleet's forces in preparation for the Death Star 2.0.
