The PS4 is still going to be fully supported for at least another year, if not longer.

Maybe. I'm not used to having systems die... my PS2 and PS3 are both still operational. I mostly use the former as a DVD player, though.

Sony has flat-out said that they're continuing to support and manufacture the PS4 even as they roll out the PS5, so "fear of losing support" is not good reasoning to abandon that console even with the PS5's launch on the horizon... especially if you like the PS4 and what it offers.

And, yes, as mentioned, the PS5 is going to be backwards-compatible with most of the PS4 games library, but what sense does it make to spend $499 for a PS5 (the standard edition is what you need if you have physical game discs for the PS4) in order to play your PS4 games when you can just replace that console (the PS4) for $299?

You're lucky the former is still working. Found out that it was bad to use my PS2 as a DVD player as it would wear it out faster. Only used it a few times before that as one. Since then, it has been strictly a game machine. Not taking any chances with it.

Because I intend to get the PS5 at some point anyway. Might as well do it sooner, and save the 299. I'm not exactly poor, but 330 clams with tax is not an expense I take lightly.

You're probably better off getting the PS5 anyway. In my area, you can't find PS4s ANYWHERE. And if you look on the Facebook Marketplace, you're looking at spending $400-$500 on a used one. Not saying you'll be able to find a PS5 at launch, but you'll end up spending almost exactly the same on a new console that you would on a used last gen system.

I agree with you. No good reason for the PS5 just yet. My PS4 is still running strong, and I actually have it elevated on two pieces of wood rather than sitting directly onto a surface. So far, the only thing showing signs of failure is the controller, which can easily be replaced.
