Ranking the films through science!

The Borgified Corpse

I'd had trouble for a while combining my list of ranking the original 6 Lucas films with the 4 new Disney films. Thankfully, I fount a handy website that's willing to help me through the process!
https://sorta.app/q/1001
I'm curious as to what all of your rankings are but here's mine (as heretical as you may consider them)...

1. Revenge of the Sith
2. Attack of the Clones.
I love the amount of visual imagination bristling within every frame of the last 2 entries of the prequel trilogy. George Lucas can craft an action set-piece like nobody's business. Ewan McGregor is such an entertaining badass as Obi-Wan and he really makes you feel his heartbreak when Anakin falls to the Dark Side. Attack of the Clones & Revenge of the Sith are very much of a single unit in my mind. However, Revenge of the Sith gets a slight edge because it's the climactic finale to the whole thing.
3. Solo. I was surprised that this one ranked so high on my list but I think it's a lot of fun with a great supporting cast. I still get chills when we get to Val's death; even with very little screentime she does a fantastic job of conveying all of her history with Beckett. And in a franchise filled with erudite British villains, Paul Bettany's ability to turn on a dime between charm & menace makes Dryden Vos the scariest of all of them.
4. A New Hope. There's a reason why it's so iconic. Some of the production values haven't completely held up over the years but every scene is indelibly burned onto the pop culture landscape. I didn't grow up with the Star Wars movies. (We were much more of a Star Trek household.) But I still can't imagine a universe where this movie doesn't exist.
5. The Last Jedi. My feelings about this movie are a bit mixed. The scenes that work--basically anything with Luke, Rey, Kylo Ren, or DJ--work incredibly well. The other stuff with Poe & Vice-Admiral Holdo and Finn & Rose just kinda feel like filler.
6. Return of the Jedi. The whole Death Star II gives it a been-there-done-that vibe, but there's still a lot of great original material here. I'm especially fond of all the Jabba's palace stuff, which is like a mini-movie of its own. And the throne room scenes between Luke, Vader, & the Emperor are the emotional core of the entire original trilogy.
7. The Phantom Menace. Most people I know would automatically put this one at the bottom of their lists. What can I say? Duel of the Fates makes up for a lot. Plus we've got more great acting with McGregor & Liam Neeson.
8. The Force Awakens. I love the new characters. Harrison Ford gives one of his best performances in 20 years. The movie looks great. But the plot is a shitty cocktail of warmed over OT cliches and goddamn J.J. Abrams mystery boxes. (Part of the reason why I ranked The Last Jedi as high as I did was because it systematically throws away all of the mystery boxes or opens them to reveal that there was never anything inside.)
9. The Empire Strikes Back. I'm sure that some fans want to burn me at the stake for putting it this low. But the thing just has no forward momentum. It's only out of respect to the original cast that it avoids last place.
10. Rogue One. It looks great and the acting's terrific but I can't bring myself to actually care about any of the characters. (Except for K2SO. I want him & L3 to get a snarky robot spin-off together.)

How does your ranking shake-out on that website?

Here is mine. Solo is last, but I haven’t seen It yet, so every other film won against it by default.

Like Turtle I was interested to see where things would fall outside the top three. I don't know if the bottom four or so will stay where they are or move around over time.https://www.trekbbs.com/members/turtletrekker.2270/

Man, Attack of the Clones is taking a beating here. Outside of my list, the highest it's able to manage is 7th. What can I say? I love how the end just keeps piling on one action beat after another, from the droid factory to the arena beasts to a crapload of Jedi fighting battle droids to Yoda showing up with the clone army to the final series of lightsaber duels where Obi-wan, Anakin, and Yoda each take on Count Dooku and barely escape with their lives.

Put that up against Anakin and Padme's painful romance scenes on Naboo, Anakin's classic complaints about sand and C3PO taking over for Jar Jar Binks in the cringe-worthy humor department during the Droid factory sequence. The good just doesn't overtake the bad.
IMHO. YMMV, of course.

As for my list, the only surprise was The Phantom Menace over Rogue One.

Worked perfectly for me

  • A New Hope
  • The Empire Strikes Back
  • Rogue One
  • Revenge of the Sith
  • Return of the Jedi
  • Solo
  • Attack of the Clones
  • The Force Awakens
  • The Phantom Menace
  • The Last Jedi

Did not use the app, but here is my list.
  • The Empire Strikes Back
  • Revenge of the Sith
  • A New Hope
  • Return of the Jedi
  • The Force Awakens
  • Rogue One
  • Solo
  • The Phantom Menace
  • Clone Wars
  • Attack of the Clones
  • The Last Jedi

yeah, the app match with my real list:

  1. The Empire Strikes Back
  2. The Last Jedi
  3. A New Hope
  4. The Force Awakens
  5. Return of the Jedi
  6. Rogue One
  7. The Phantom Menace
  8. Solo
  9. Revenge of the Sith
  10. Attack of the Clones

I have to confess, I took it twice since the first time really didn't feel right to me.
Here's what I got the second time
  1. The Force Awakens
  2. The Last Jedi
  3. The Empire Strikes Back
  4. Return of the Jedi
  5. Rogue One
  6. Solo
  7. Revenge of the Sith
  8. Attack of the Clones
  9. A New Hope
  10. The Phantom Menace
The only change I'd make is I'd flip The Empire Strikes Back and The Force Awakens. I can't remember those two popping up together in the quiz, so I'm thinking I must have gone so fast I accidentally clicked the wrong one.

Let's see:

1. Empire Strikes Back

2. A New Hope

3. Revenge of the Sith

4. The Force Awakens

5. Return of the Jedi

6. Attack of the Clones

7. Rogue One

8. The Phantom Menace

9. Solo

10. The Last Jedi

Here's mine. They seem about right:

  • The Empire Strikes Back
  • A New Hope
  • The Last Jedi
  • Attack of the Clones
  • Revenge of the Sith
  • Return of the Jedi
  • Rogue One
  • Solo
  • The Phantom Menace
  • The Force Awakens

My list went:

The Empire Strikes Back--sounds right, it's always been my favorite of the OT.
A New Hope
Return of the Jedi
Revenge of the Sith--again, my favorite of the PT.
Attack of the Clones
The Phantom Menace
Rouge One
Solo
The Force Awakens
The Last Jedi

Their results were pretty accurate except the last two should read:
The Life and Times of Jar Jar Binks
The Force Awakens
Fifty feet of vomit
Twenty five miles of blood
Forty thousand light years of crap
Fifty million light years of shit
Brussel Sprouts
The Last Jedi.

There's nothing really scientific about Star Wars movies. A random Neil Simon play probably has more science in it. They don't advocate a scientific method, or at least, anyone who does is the bad guy building Uber Weapon to kill the last holdouts for former theocratic space warriors.

but if I had to make a guess (and I, like a good chunk of humanity, haven't seen Solo)

Attack of the Clones
Rogue One
Phantom Menace
Revenge of the Sith
New Hope
ESB
ROTJ
The force awakens
the last jedi

this isn't based on which movies I like the most, just on what I think were attempts at having some element of science fiction vs space opera. Nothing wrong with space opera, either, and to be honest its hard ranking them when they are all so low on the bar, in terms of actual science fiction. Maybe the prequels are so high on the list because the Galactic Republic was pure Asimov and H. Beam Piper rip-off

  1. The Empire Strikes Back
  2. A New Hope
  3. Return of the Jedi
  4. Rogue One
  5. The Last Jedi
  6. Revenge of the Sith
  7. The Force Awakens
  8. Attack of the Clones
  9. The Phantom Menace
Didn't rank Solo as I haven't seen it yet (hopefully seeing it this weekend). But other than that its pretty much as I would have expected.
