Did the original three foot have those hatch markings on the bottom? If so that blows my mind!
So yes, the markings on the underside have been there from the start (
here are some good shots of the model early on).
What is odd is that I really wasn't expecting that to be the question asked about markings on this model. I figured people would ask about the markings on and around the bridge.
They are similar to the markings on the 11 foot model for the pilot... yet different. In both cases, the markings seemed to be there to help with focusing the camera on that part of the model. And that they were seemingly added to the smaller model if the larger one was too late to use for that one zoom in shot.
Shaw, you have most of the history of that model realized. I think the only real thing left may be this. It was supposedly built but I’ve never seen any photo of the small model-
I have thought about building such a model, but I really wanted to make sure that it was the same size as the one Jefferies put together. I have notes on this somewhere, but as I recall the only person to give a size was Howard A. Anderson (in an interview with American Cinematographer). He said it was about 4 inches long... but this is also the interview where he said the 11 foot model was
14 feet long (it is also the earliest reference to that length I've found), so I'm not sure I would trust any sizes he gives.
I had considered pushing forward with a 10 or 11 inch version, something large enough to include as much of the details as shown in Jefferies' artwork.
Most of my model building stuff was lost to storage some 6 years ago, so it is amazing that I'm able to do the things I've done with what I still have (like finishing the 33 inch replica).
Actually, a good example of stuff lost to storage is my Jupiter 2 model. I had some of the pieces sitting together on a shelf, but most of the rest of the kit was in storage. Earlier this week I decided to just take a day and build what I still had... this is how that turned out.
It doesn't have an interior, but at least it looks like the Jupiter 2 from most angles. And it only took me 25 years to get around to building it.
Oh, and on the subject of models just sitting around, here is a couple group shots of some of them.
We have the starships Columbia, my pilot Enterprise and my pre-TMP Enterprise. And below them is my shuttlecraft Columbus and a test assembly of the masters of my scratch built space shuttle Enterprise.
I had made molds of all the space shuttle parts, but I'm no where near getting the resin I need so I decided to test how the parts worked together by assembling the masters. I'm building it with the tail cone because that was how it was for its first flight... and how I saw it in person back in 1978 (to date, the only time I've seen a shuttle in person).
The space shuttle is about 1/125th scale, which makes the final model about the same size as my 1/25th lifting body models (
here), which are also still just the masters and waiting for resin to move forward with them.
