Phasers

Actually the phasers seen in ST VI were originally created and used in ST V: TFF. So I guess Shat got at that part right at least.

And yes, they were my favorites, closely followed by the original TOS phasers, and the EM-33 from ENT.

I'm with ya on the EM-33. I liked the look, of it...and the fact that it wasn't a beam weapon. You needed some skill to hit your targets (notice that in Broken Bow, no one hit anything with an EM-33? I'm not talking about the covering fire either-right after the Suliban woman is shot, Archer fires a few times, and misses from a relatively close distance.) Also, the lethality pf it. You can't stun-you have to shoot to wound. Although, the weapons that the MACOs used later on were pretty similar, and had a stun setting, although it was more like a "rubber baton" round than the stun setting of a phase pistol, although I got the impression that it was charged with whatever makes a phase pistol stun (if that makes any sense), to give it some knock-out capability . I'd imagine that the earlier EM-33s had a similar feature as well, but without the "stun stuff", making it purely a baton type round, inflicting physical pain, hopefully enough to subdue the target, but not outright stunning them.

So yeah, after all that rambling, I think that the EM-33 and EM-41 (the designation given to the pulse rifle MACOs used), along with the Class-3 pulse rifle (the one that the NX-01 crew was originally armed with-later turned into a "phase rifle") are my favorite Starfleet weapons.

Were the type-1 phasers seen in TNG smaller than the type-1 seen in TOS?

James
Yes. Not DRAMATICALLY so, but yes. I'd say a bit less than 2/3 of the size, maybe as little as half.

I say that based upon (1) A resin "recast" of a TNG-era prop I've got (painted up and looking like the early-series "real thing"), and the Master Replicas TOS Phaser (which includes a Type 1).

Truthfully, the TNG-era one is a bit better designed for by-hand use, though I think the TOS-era one is more mechanically practical (particularly with the top-up targeting screen... under what Franz Joseph incorrect determined as the "electron aspirator pile" or whatever he called it... the trigger is on the underside, not the top!).

Take the shape of the TNG-era one, give it a better targeting system, paint it black, or some dark color (for better tactical effectiveness... stealth and all that...) and you'd have the best possible option.

FYI, there were some later-series "cricket phasers" created in concept, but never used on-screen. Go to the same "phasers" website linked earlier in the thread, and you can find pics of some of those.

Did the TOS & TNG type-1 run out of power, if so how'd they and the TNG's type-2 be recharged?
I know that TOS type-2 had power packs as seen in a TOS episode which I can't name.

Well, the TOS "phaser one" had a panel on the underside which was removable. I would assume that you could swap out power packs through there. There could have been a hidden "charging panel" like some mice have today, as well, but nothing was visible on the prop.

On the TNG era stuff, they were kept in drawers which had "charging sockets" the phasers were stored in. This can be seen in the TNG Tech Manual (especially well in the Quicktimes in the electronic version - you can see them in the transporter room).

One reason I hate TNG hand phasers is what if starfleet personnel beam down to a planet and get any such recharging equipment destroyed in an attack and siege and can't get resupplied, their stuck with what charges are in the phasers. Give me either TOS type-2 or the assult phaser, at least I'll have power clips in case of a long siege.
