PETCO Has Lost Their Minds!

It's not that hard to avoid your snake getting bitten as long as you make the snake aware that there's a mouse in the tank, and don't leave the snake alone until it has killed the mouse. If it appears uninterested, remove the mouse from the tank.

Bites often happen when someone drops a mouse in and walks away, expecting the snake to eat it.

We do have books on proper snake care, and the Serpentarium is a great resource.

Robert I tend to agree with you. We've fed the snake about 20 times, and he has never had any problems. We always watch and don't walk away until it's over.

I really don't have a problem with live feeding. I do want to double check though, just to be extra cautious.

What's wrong with feeding frozen-thawed...?

There are pictures of snakes being bitten and in some cases eaten alive by the hungry rodents left in the cage. You should search around on the internet for pictures. There are plenty of them. I find this site: www.anapsid.org to be a great resources. I kindda know the lady that own it and she is the author of the book, "Iguanas for Dummies".

I've been keep reptiles as a hobby longer than a lot of people, so I know these things. Trust me on this.

The problem with frozen-thawed is that some snakes won't eat it, as has been stated several times, though you seem intent on ignoring that.

I guess an alternative would be to buy a live mouse and then kill it yourself, dropping the fresh corpse into the tank. Then it'll still be plenty warm enough for the snake to detect and attack it.

You seem to don't get that you can train the animals to eat it. Ball python as a species are not that hard to get it to switched. I've talked to reputable breeders and they all said they don't know what the problem is with some people, but they have never had problem getting their ball python to eat frozen-thawed... I've been doing this a lot longer than a lot of people. I know what I'm talking about....

That reminds me of the Futurama episode where the hippies taught the lion to eat tofu.

You must not know what you're talking about since you're apparently incapable of feeding live mice to a snake without putting its health in jeopardy.

What's wrong with feeding frozen thawed...? Duh!

A mouse dies either way. I don't see where either method is more humane to the mouse. If the snake is hungry enough to eat I doubt the mouse is going to be physically uncomfortable for very long.

Really people! Any time an animal (including human) eats something dies. Bread originates from what were living wheat seeds. Consuming milk and cheese deprives milk from the young of the animal producing the milk. The only life that doesn't depend on something else dying are plants that produce sugars through photosynthesis and a few organisms near undersea volcanic vents.

It's the way nature has worked for billions of years. Don't get so upset over it!

If you want to shorten the pain or other discomfort animals experience when they are raised and/or put down that's another matter. They aren't immortal. Old age or disease aren't going to be any more pleasant.

I was concerned about the snake getting bitten by the mouse or rat.

He said he watches the snake, it hasn't been a problem, and he's going to consult some other people just to be on the safe side. There's no reason for further concern.

I agree with whoever wrote a while back that this was a misunderstanding. Either the cashier or the store policy itself is confused over what a "companion animal" is and that this term would obviously NOT be the appropriate one for the mouse you were getting.

miscommunication and misunderstanding somewhere is my guess.

My wife bought another mouse today. They gave her the same form they gave me. When she questioned them, they replied that she was basically agreeing to "treat the mouse humanely until it was fed to the snake."

So, yes. The mouse has a lovely car ride, with a view out the window and soothing music to entertain it.

And just so you know, our Big Boy ate it immediately, with no problems.

:techman:

You can starve it into eating frozen mice. I've done that with mine. Reptiles can, especially snakes, can go quite a while with food and water.

Just make sure he has heat and water while you are training him to eat the frozen-thawed mice.
Yeah, but frozen and thawed mice just don’t taste the same as fresh. And they get all mushy.

. . . Those freaking SPCA and Humane Society are probably at it again. I don't like them.
The ASPCA and the American Humane Association are generally reasonable in their philosophies, goals and methods. PETA is where the batshit animal-rights extremists are.

Was gonna write a nice essay....asking Digits about any shops that specializes in reptiles. I saw one in Arizona years and years ago. Wouldn't be surprised if there were a few in Digits' neck of the woods (Southern California).

No. A zombie thread...not like the time I almost responded to one before seeing a Mallory post.

Thanks a lot for resurrecting a five-year old thread :klingon::scream:
