In the new star trek trailer Paul McGillion can be seen talking to a group of cadets at 1:12.

Are you kidding?!?! Simon Pegg is worlds above and beyond a better choice than some fourth-billed actor from a Canadian sci-fi series.

Let's get serious here. You can't have the same 10 sci-fi TV actors in everything and expect success. Simon Pegg is talented and perhaps the biggest name in the cast of the film. And once the film comes out you guys will sing his praises because the few people that have seen the movie love him as Scotty.

Paul has a role in the film like Greg Grunberg had a role in M:I-III

Regardless, I am glad Paul got a small part in the movie. I just hope he gets to speak a line or two.

Good catch, I think its nice that they gave him a little role. Personally I'm not sure Paul would have been a good Scotty, despite having the right physicality, no offence to him but I don't think he has the acting ability or the charisma for the part - though, having said that, I don't think Simon Pegg is right for the part either and I adore Simon Pegg.

Is it me or does it look like McGillion is wearing a Genii uniform in that Trek XI pic? Now I'm trying to think up a joke about him and Chief O'Brien hanging out.

So it seems McGillion's role is some sort of Starfleet Academy instructor? I was hoping he'd be Robert April. Hell I'd be satisfied if he were Gary Mitchell or Finnegan. But generic instructor? Yet another mistake in this movie's long list of mistakes.

^It's a mistake because they didn't cast a minor television actor in a key role ?

Please. If they were in the movie, I doubt Robert April, Gary Mitchell or Finnegan would have been key roles. Just cameos with a scene or two. However, Robert April is an iconic Trek character, Mitchell and Finnegan are memorable to TOS fans. Any of these characters would have been more appropriate for an actor of McGillion's status in the sci-fi community instead of a generic Starfleet Academy instructor.

Stargate fans are not the overall Sci-Fi community. Most Star Trek fans probably don't even know who McGillion is.

Okay, how about the guy who auditioned for Scotty should still get a respectable cameo instead of being a generic no-named guy who will probably get his lines deleted?

^Auditioning for a role doesn't mean you get given a part if you don't get the one you wanted.

But if you do somehow end up with a part in the movie, as McGillion did, it should be something worth talking about, as a means of compensation. Generic Starfleet Drill Sergeant is not worth talking about. In fact, we wouldn't be talking about this character if anyone other than McGillion were playing him.

^By your logic, Michael Shanks should have been cast in a significant role in Star Trek: Nemesis just because he auditioned for the part of Shinzon.

No, because Shanks didn't end up with a role in Nemesis at all. McGillion auditioned for Scotty, was rejected, but Abrams went and got something for him anyway. If you're going to get a part for a rejected actor, get them something that people will talk about. Not a random forgettable background character.

^Or, he could have just said "NEXT!" which is how 99.99999% of auditions in the movie business end.

Cripes, I still think Shanks would have made that movie less painful to watch. Shanks playing a dark villain to Stewart's Picard? Hell, I'm there no matter how bad the script is.

And yeah, I like Simon Pegg as much as the next geek, but I disagree with the notion that he's capable of playing Scotty. McGillion looks like a young Doohan and was born in Scotland, for crying out loud. We've seen an intensity of focus and emotional range in his acting that fits right along with the Scotty I at least remember. It's right up there with what it must have been like when Michael Shanks auditioned for the role of Daniel Jackson. To cast the incredibly one-note Pegg over someone visually suited for the role who already knows their way around intense science fiction technobabble and is already comfortable with the Scottish accent? I mean, McGillion had "obvious perfect casting choice" all over him. I will think Pegg's a mistake until the minute the movie starts, then he has the chance to prove me wrong. And before people start launching things, I've seen Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and his stint on Doctor Who,and I was not overly impressed by any of them.

Still only seeing the movie for Karl Urban and Paul McGillion, though.

^So, basically, Nemesis would have been better because Michael Shanks is, apparently, hot and some Canadian TV actor is a better choice than an already well known film star who also happens to be a fan himself and is determined to do the role justice ?

I'm just going to sit here and be the last person on Earth who wants to watch this movie because he's a Star Trek fan and not because of what the cast look like. I won't be sitting here moaning about the new Enterprise design, ship registration numbers having the wrong number of zeroes or Shatner not being in the movie.

I like Paul McGillion as much as the next guy but if his fans can't see why Simon Pegg, someone Abrams has worked with before, then that's not really my problem, Pegg's or indeed Abrams'.

Let's you and me get tickets together because I'm right there with you.
