Origins of Goa'ould tech?

Silversmok3

Here's something that the SG series of episodes and movies never got around to explaining:

How did the Gould make/develop such cool technology? Was there a caste of engineers living on some isolated rock testing the next zat for some random system lord,or did that aspect of gould civiluzation get wiped out long ago?

I haven't seen every SG epsode,so maybe I missed the story of the Gould's area 51 eqivalent.

The Goauld were presented as scavengers. The bulk of their tech appears to have been based on Ancient devices that they eventually found and claimed was invented by them as they grew their empire. The ring transporters, sarcophagus, data/control crystals, personal shields and staff weapons, are all derived from Ancient tech. Individual System Lords had scientists-Baal and Kronos were shown having someone who worked for them, developing technology.

I do remember in Homecoming Anubis having a Gould scientist who was trying to master the naquadriah...and was ,ahem, fired (via staff weapon) when it didn't work.

Can't say that's a good way to encourage scientific discovery.

The Goa'uld System Lords aren't the only Goa'uld. There are many, many underlings who just do as they are told. Their technology is reverse engineered from whatever they have been able to find. They basically got there the same way Earth did, by copying.

Fortunately for us, we had the Asgard helping us along.

Yes, it was stated in the series that they were scavengers and never really developed their OWN tech. Instead, they stole technology, backwards engineered it, and made it their own. So they at least do understand the technology, but they basically stole everything, and have been using it a lot longer than us.

Ring Transporters for example are an Ancient Technology. The Sarc is based off of the Ancient healing cube we found.

Nerti supposedly developed a personal cloaking device on her own, and the weapons used to kill the Retu, and it was said in "fair game" by Yu that any tech a system lord had developed must be shared implying that the system lords all had scientists, so I don't think that ALL Goa'uld tech was stolen, most of it was, but they had enough knowledge that they could create some of thier own stuff

Nerti supposedly developed a personal cloaking device on her own,

She could have easily copied this technology from the Sodan or by studying captured Retu.

They developed technology by reverse engineering it from stuff they found. Their ships, for instance, are clearly of their own design but the technologies that went in to building them are copied.

the Retu are naturally invisible, so if she studied them she would have only learned HOW it was possible to become invisible, she would have had to do the legwork in designing a personal cloak on her own.. but it's not like Stargate was very constant on it's cloaking tech, first it was stated in "The Nox" Aphophis was seeking a bug that could turn invisible because he had no cloaking tech, then Nerti had her personal cloak, then for a few season's the Goa'uld could only seem to generate a cloaking field around cargo ships, until Aphophis took over Sokar's fleet which had cloaked motherships

^It's wrong to assume that the Goa'uld just picked up bits of technology that were lying around and started to use them. No, they did just what the SGC has done - they reverse engineered advanced technology and then built their own.

They're not Pakleds, they understand the technology they use.

Teal'c even said that the Goa'uld stole most of their technology
I'm would have thought that some of the more inteligent races would have thought
"Hey, a true god wouldn't need a device* to do this?"
(*I.E. the one thats on their hand to fries your brain)

Please. That's not a device. It's magic. Get it right. If it were a device, you'd expect that a slave or Jaffa who had a hand-ribbon could use one. Clearly, they can't, so it must be some Goa'uld magic.
