Official Star Trek Week 9 Box Office Thread

The film again had a better per theatre average than the 3 films directing ahead of it.

Which is great news, but somewhat frustrating because if it hadn't been forced out of theaters to make room for some newer movies, it could be earning even more for even longer.

Still, I think we can call this an unqualified success. :bolian:

Slow fade probably won't take it to 260... more like 255.

FLOP!

If you think that's bad, imagine what it would have been like if Jeri hadn't gone to see it about a million times...

Perish the thought!

Is it possible that Star Trek could ADD more theatres?

The question to my mind is why were they taken away so fast if the per-theater earning was still doing very well...

All depends on continued performance, but I don't think it is likely. Harry Potter's going to extinguish whatever flickering flame Star Trek has left...

Just think if the sequel does just 20% better, it'll be 300 million domestic and 150 million foreign...

Star Trek will eventually pick up some second-run theatres, but that will be further down the line when its in a lot less theatres to begin with.

I guess my IMAX would be a "first-and-a-half-run theater" then... :p

Every penny helps though.

Now the slow fade begins, it will rise painfully slow from here on, but that's ok. It succeeded on the two most important fronts it made money and it got excellent reviews.

Paramount had a very successful summer Trek & Transformers which will turn in over a billion dollars combined worldwide.

Way more than a billion in fact. They're already at $983 million worldwide combined (Tr2 - $607.7 million, Trek - $375.3 million)

Since Box Office Mojo has updated their figures, I will now once again present the Top 10 highest-grossing films worldwide of 2009 (some of the foreign numbers are as of the end of this past weekend, but it shouldn't make a huge difference... except perhaps in a couple of places I'll talk about below). Here it is:

1. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
Domestic: $305,522,774 / 49.0%
+ Foreign: $317,465,807 / 51.0%
= Worldwide: $622,988,581

2. Angels & Demons
Domestic: $131,324,373 / 27.8%
+ Foreign: $341,871,824 / 72.2%
= Worldwide: $473,196,197

3. Star Trek
Domestic: $250,335,827 / 66.7%
+ Foreign: $125,224,171 / 33.3%
= Worldwide: $375,559,998

4. Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian
Domestic: $168,368,519 / 44.8%
+ Foreign: $207,168,580 / 55.2%
= Worldwide: $375,537,099

5. Monsters vs. Aliens
Domestic: $196,677,035 / 53.1%
+ Foreign: $173,875,847 / 46.9%
= Worldwide: $370,552,882

6. X-Men Origins: Wolverine
Domestic: $178,447,519 / 49.2%
+ Foreign: $184,604,723 / 50.8%
= Worldwide: $363,052,242

7. Terminator Salvation
Domestic: $122,776,735 / 35.0%
+ Foreign: $227,793,045 / 65.0%
= Worldwide: $350,569,780

8. Fast and Furious
Domestic: $155,064,265 / 44.4%
+ Foreign: $194,250,339 / 55.6%
= Worldwide: $349,314,604

9. Up
Domestic: $267,032,381 / 84.0%
+ Foreign: $50,800,000 / 16.0%
= Worldwide: $317,832,381

10. The Hangover
Domestic: $208,966,655 / 77.2%
+ Foreign: $61,600,000 / 22.8%
= Worldwide: $270,566,655

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs is already in the #11 spot and climbing fast. Here is its take so far:

Domestic: $80,417,460 / 34.6%
+ Foreign: $151,697,196 / 65.4%
= Worldwide: $232,114,656

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is clearly the film to beat this summer -- probably the only movie that has a chance at doing so is Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, which opens next week. Good luck Harry.

Star Trek and Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian are virtually neck-in-neck for the #3 position; actually, considering ST's foreign totals are as of Monday and NATM 2's are as of Sunday, it's quite possible that the latter has already eclipsed Trek, if not on Monday then almost certainly on Tuesday. A shame, but #4 is still quite a feat for a Star Trek movie (even though it too won't last).

As I noted over the weekend, Terminator Salvation managed to move past Fast and Furious and nab the #7 spot -- perhaps it will even catch up with X-Men Origins: Wolverine. TS has fared pretty well in the foreign markets, but that domestic intake has definitely got to sting a little bit for Warner Bros. Me, I'm just glad that here in North America, a great Star Trek film managed to outperform a mediocre Terminator film -- perhaps there is some justice in this world after all. ;)

Luckily, WB only had to pay $50 million for the domestic rights to TS. That and maybe $75 million in promotion. They might actually make a decent amount if they get the DVD profits.

Boy, I do not get the foreign market; you can't get much more American than the Smithsonian Institution -- and people supposedly complain that Star Trek is too American for their tastes.

Don't you remember that TOS episode where the Shat recites from the Holy Scribe--"We the PEOPLE"...?

:p

Seriously, and the new bridge is Red, White and Blue... what do you expect?

Wir, die Leute would have been more like it; those guys looked like some kind of Teutonic tribe.

Yeah that's for sure, different movies that bomb in North America do really well around the world, and films that do awesome in North America, flop oversees. It just shows you that there is a cultural difference between North America and the rest of the world as to taste in entertainment.

How is a movie studio to know? And I wonder if the American companies will green light a project if it makes no money at home but all it's money oversees.
So that it actually does make a profit.

Preliminary estimates for Tuesday are up... Just makes you wonder what another 1000 theaters would do... :/

Edit: Darn you, MvRojoooooooo!

Looks like the film may top out at around $255 million by the time it leaves the final domestic theaters where it's still playing.
