First of all, that's not the Will Riker we know, it's Tom Riker (transporter clone).
Secondly, isn't this in the FAQ or something?
Thirdly: Tom knew that if O'Brien talked to him for any length of time, the truth would come out: O'Brien would find out that it was Tom, not Will, and that would throw Tom's plan all out of whack. So Tom had to have an excuse to get out of there as quick as possible.
So we're left with 2 possibilities. Either Tom Riker showed poor judgment, or the writers of the episode showed poor judgment. Not sure which.

No he was trying to get O'Brien off the ship. Remember this happened because O'Brien was on the Defiant at the time. Once O'Brien leaves, he stuns Kira shortly after. He's not gonna worry about what O'Brien thinks of him once he's got the ship.
If I had a dollar for how often this same topic comes up in the DS9 forum over the years, I would have paid off my mortgage and car payments by now.
Of course he would - remember Worf's chat with Odo early in S4 (I forget the precise ep), where he complains about how O'Brien keeps popping round for a chat about the Enterprise? "Maybe if I am more... inhospitable, he will stop." O'Brien loves to gab. Then again, even if he was, O'Brien probably would have wanted to stay and chat with him, which, if he asks a question Tom didn't know...
The problem wasn't Riker's statement, it was O'Brien's reaction, or lack of.
He should have at least responded with a "What the fuck you on about!"
