O'brien and Riker

Butters

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
In The Defiant episode. Why is Riker Pissed at O'brien, he tells him 'I have nothing to say to you O'brien. I think you know why.'

Whats that about?

First of all, that's not the Will Riker we know, it's Tom Riker (transporter clone).

Secondly, isn't this in the FAQ or something? ;)

Thirdly: Tom knew that if O'Brien talked to him for any length of time, the truth would come out: O'Brien would find out that it was Tom, not Will, and that would throw Tom's plan all out of whack. So Tom had to have an excuse to get out of there as quick as possible.

This is this board's most frequently asked question after "Why isn't my avatar showing up ?" isn't it ? :D

I see, I haven't explored the board fully and have now just spotted the FAQ.

Cheers :)

I've read all the explanations for Tom Riker's "I have nothing to say to you" line directed at O'Brien, and in my opinion, there is no good explanation. All Riker had to do was exchange pleasantries with the chief. The last thing he wanted to do was raise a red flag, which this line most certainly did.

So we're left with 2 possibilities. Either Tom Riker showed poor judgment, or the writers of the episode showed poor judgment. Not sure which.

No he was trying to get O'Brien off the ship. Remember this happened because O'Brien was on the Defiant at the time. Once O'Brien leaves, he stuns Kira shortly after. He's not gonna worry about what O'Brien thinks of him once he's got the ship.

Wasn't he already on his way out?

Then again, even if he was, O'Brien probably would have wanted to stay and chat with him, which, if he asks a question Tom didn't know...

If I had a dollar for how often this same topic comes up in the DS9 forum over the years, I would have paid off my mortgage and car payments by now.

Searching through the archives, you'd have closer to $5, maybe a little more. It doesn't seem to be that common of a topic really.

And now to resort to the age-old retort:

"Everybody knows Tom Riker hates transporters! O'Brien never had a chance!"

Then again, even if he was, O'Brien probably would have wanted to stay and chat with him, which, if he asks a question Tom didn't know...
Of course he would - remember Worf's chat with Odo early in S4 (I forget the precise ep), where he complains about how O'Brien keeps popping round for a chat about the Enterprise? "Maybe if I am more... inhospitable, he will stop." O'Brien loves to gab.

It was really bad luck that Tom had there. Any other people present on the bridge would have been no problem - he could have shot them all once Kira opened the locks. But O'Brien was the one guy who could expose him prematurely.

And he must have known beforehand that the Chief of Ops on the station was his old acquaintance. Why didn't he have a contingency plan, one that would allow him to keep track of the whereabouts of this major element of risk? Perhaps that would have been too complicated for a single operative to handle, but he did have accomplices. Was one of them asleep at the wheel, perhaps?

The problem wasn't Riker's statement, it was O'Brien's reaction, or lack of.

He should have at least responded with a "What the fuck you on about!"

And be court-martialed? He's as traditional a NCO as they come: he'd never do anything like that.

If he suspected there was something "amiss", he'd also immediately suspect Riker had a perfectly good reason for there to be something amiss. Such as "Get the hell out of here, Miles, and play along. Once I have scored, I'll buy you a pint or five."...

Finally, a different spin on this age old battered to death question; Basically, o'brien wouldn't have done this because he is an NCO, and when a very senior officer like riker tells you that you've got nothing to say to them, then you button it and make yourself scarce as soon as possible.

I always felt for O'Brien in that moment. He must've been wracking his brain trying to figure out why Commander Riker was suddenly and inexplicably mad at him.

From O'Brians facial expression and reaction he clearly didn't know why Riker was angry with him. O'Brian would pretty much just keep shtung and try and think why on Earth Riker might be angry with him. At the end of the day it worked and allowed Tom to avoid any conversation with him about 'old times'.
