New Flu Virus SPREADS!

Here's some reading for you, Trekker.
Thanks ''Spaceman'' I was about to go to wiki and make a link, you saved me the trouble!

Yes, yes, I'm aware of the 1918 Pandemic your little links don't impress me much.

*MY* point is that this is nothing to fret over until it IS an issue. Either it's something we can't do anything about as it's a mad pandemic that'll wipe out a billion people, it's a serious problem that make ill or kill people in places where helath care isn't great/where people aren't getting treatment or vaccinated; or it's media hype bullshit. (SARS, anyone? How many people was THAT supposed to wipe out? Sure it was a problem but not nearly the cataclysm the media made it out to be -atleast not in the US.)

Don't fret over it until it's a real problem. Let the doctors, professionals and CDC work to contain it/make a vaccine. As right now all it is to me is just media hysteria. They need new bad-news snake oil to sell and I'm not in the market for it.

Healthcare has improved dramaticly, have you not read MORE people are living over a hundred!

One good link deserves another.

Yes, one has to admit, as worries go, it's nowhere up there with "Why can't I get a girlfriend?"

Several of us have already said that it's nothing to panic over yet, so I don't know what your point is, other than to be smug.

I was living in Toronto at the time, which was the hot spot for SARS. Watching the news, you would've thought we were all dying. I remember watching a CNN report, and the anchor was showing how everyone on the street was wearing masks. The guy was standing in front of Scarborough General Hospital, where they were taking all the SARS patients, but the camera had an angle where you couldn't tell it was the hospital and it did look like any old street. "Here in Toronto, the people are frightened. Masks are seen on the streets..." I remember thinking you fucking assholes. When the tourism industry was hit real hard and they were blaming SARS, I always thought don't blame SARS, blame CNN. The city of Toronto should have sued their asses. I never once saw a single mask on a street NOT in front of a hospital, and never knew anyone who gave a shit about SARS. So overblown. 400 sick in a city of 4 million...PANDEMIC!

Well, on a related note I think our society has gotten too obsesed with anti-bacterial and antibotics. Both of which don't do much good to pomote healthy immune systems.

Heck, I don't even think you can BUY soap anymore that's not anti-bacterial. What if I *want* to be exposed to bacteria?! You know, so as to give my immune system something to fight?

I came down with something a few years back (I want to say it was a mild flu or maybe bronchial infection.) and my doctor prescribed me some antibiotics. Didn't take them. Kept myself fed, hydrated and rested for a few days and came out of it fine. There are times you do need antibotics to stay off severe illness, that time wasn't one of them.

What does this have to do with "OMGSUPERFLU!!!!"? Not much.

Just that diseases, viruses, supposed pandemics don't bother me any. Either I'm going to get sick and get better either through self-treatment or medical science or it's going to be that 1-in-a-billion shot of it been a population destroying pandemic that I can't do anything to stop. Freaking out over it and following media hype isn't going to change it.

Checking Wikipedia's page on SARS. It killed 44 people of 251 in Canada and 0 of 27 people in the US. It was mostly deadly in China with 349 deaths of over 5000 cases (19 of which were not directly related to SARS). It had a worldwide mortality rate of 9.6% (775 deaths out of 8373 cases (60 cases not directly related to SARS) I don't know much about China's healthcare system, but I'm supposing that it's not as good as the US's and Canada's given the higher mortality rate there and higher incidence of infection. (And, yes, China is more populous than the US and Canada combined, but without doing the actual math and just looking at it, it would seem the "per capita" would still suggest that China wasn't as well prepared to deal with it as the US and Canada. were.)

LINK

EDIT - Going by percentages, SARS was "more deadly" in Canada than it was in China. (17% to 6.6%)

It's a Catch-22. Yeah, it's often media hype, but heightened public concern keeps the CDC and such hot on the potential epidemic's tail.

It's hard to say whether SARS would have been as successfully contained without the public freaking out over it.

I'm not going to be freaking out about "swine flu," and I'm not suggesting anyone here do so, either. But there should be enough concern to keep it from getting out of control, and unfortunately, that probably means media coverage.

OH MY GOD THE FLU!!!!

NOT THE FLU!!!!

I'LL FEEL LIKE SHIT FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS AND WILL TAKE SO MUCH TYLENOL MY LIVER WILL BRUST OUT OF MY TORSO AND STRANGLE ME!!!

Seriously. It's the fucking flu.

Unless you've got a weak immune system due to other disease or age you're going to just feel like shit for a couple of days and then be OK. I've had the flu before. It sucks. But I somehow survived.

It's targeting healthy people age 25 to 44. That's a little different.
Most flu strains attack the elderly, children and weak immune systems. This flu's hitting healthy people in their prime.
That's a badass strain of flu.

J.

It's the Robau Flu, obviously. :D

I would think, and hope, that the CDC takes care of and contains potential epidemics on facts and other scientific evidence rather than the concerns over the nation of chicken littles we have.

Reminds me of that stupid H5N1 bird flu hype. OH SHI- a few random people who work on farms in remote areas of the world have contracted flu from their birds OMG HUMANS CAN CONTRACT A DISEASE WE DIDN'T KNOW THEY COULD BEFORE IT'S THE END OF THE WORLD WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE!!

Now most people have forgotten about it or don't care anymore after the "LOL WE'RE GOING TO HAVE A PANDEMIC" media scare died down. The same thing will happen here, except even fewer people will care and the hype will die down even sooner.

I hope it is overhyped...however my grandfather's mother and 2 brothers died from the 1918 Spanish flu, and as they say in BSGland

All this has happened before, and will happen again.
(Cue dramatic music)

The Flu is a virus, right? Antibiotics work well against bacteria, but are far less effective against virii. The most they really do is mask the symptoms and maybe boost the immune system a bit until the body fights it off on its own.

But if this is a type of flu that turns one's immune system against oneself...do you want your immune system to be boosted?

It almost sounds like you'd want your immune system to be strong enough to not catch it, but weak enough that, if you do, it can't damage you too hard.

Of course, but one would hope that political figures would act ethically without the media watchdogging them, too.

Again, it's probably nothing, but it does have to be covered, and with any new, virulent strain of the flu, it has to be treated seriously.
