New Communicator!

Considering the mix of elements, I think it is pretty good. Without a highjack, what do the tricorders look like?

I'm guessing Tricorder today.

I wonder what the common 'civilian' model of a Communicator looks like.
I'm guessing something more in line with a modern Smart Phone.

The Starfleet one is probably designed to be robust and strong, to be used in a lot of different environments without breaking. Which is why it looks more simple compared to today's phones. It just has the necessary functions.

Its like the military equivalent of a Nokia flip phone. It is just what it needs to be, none of the extra stuff.

In function though the communicator is more like a modern satellite phone though, isn't it? I don't see why there would be a civilian model, if you're planet side you'd probably use something more like a cell phone because it'd be more in common with one. If you reside on Earth do you need your "phone" to be able to directly communicate with spaceships and the moon?

Yeah a communicator needs to function in the absence of infrastructure - they're not really analogous to a smartphone, a future version of which would probably be found on settled worlds.

The fonts in Damien Devlin's graphic have narrower numbers, and the DSC title font for text. So, the graphic made me wonder about the fonts on the real communicator screen.

Comparing it to the promo video, it looks like the font for the word "Active" is closer to the font for the numbers. And the number font in the promo video, as well as other LCARS graphics I've seen, looks quite similar to the Kelvin fonts.

In any case, awesome job! I like the P2P and ship-to-ship readouts and waveforms.

To reference Wrath of Khan
