Now that the World series is over, we can still talk about what's going on in the Offseason. It's almost become a season in itself with all the moves and trades going on. So, why not have a thread to discuss the big moves, awards and stuff. Looking forward to the winter meetings and seeing if they truely are thinking about making games 3 innings long? I must say though, even though I didn't watch the game last night (Class), I do like the idea of a 3 inning long game.

Can't believe I just heard that the Yankees might make an offer to Manny...

Honestly, I'd be more surprised if there were a player in the league the Yankees didn't make an offer to. They are desperate to win and have somehow equated throwing money at people with winning.

Except in Manny's case, he clearly enjoys having money thrown at him. "Gas is up and so am I"...

When they won, most of their key players were farm players, not big name free agent signings. Every year, they've signed new big name players and it hasn't brought them anything. During that time, the Florida Marlins won paying their players peanuts.

Money doesn't equal winning in baseball.

Well I'm wondering how the Mets are going to address their holes, they've got a lot of them. They need an everyday second baseman and a left fielder. I'd take an upgrade over Schneider at catcher, he was underwhelming. They picked up Delgado's option, which could go either way depending on what version of him we see.

Assuming they don't resign Pedro (please don't!), they need a back of the rotation starter. Depending on what happens With Perez (he's a free agent) they might need 2.

The bullpen needs a complete overhaul, I don't know how they will fix that mess.

As for the Yanks titles in the late 90s, they had homegrown talent surrounded by solid, but not top shelf, free agents. They fielded a good team that played well together, not an all star team. Brosius, O'Neill, and Tino Martinez were nice players but not all timers by any means.

They didn't really start buying like mad until the Giambi signing after losing the 2001 World Series. They later tacked on A-Rod, Abreu, Damon, Matsui, etc.

Holliday to the A's, eh? I just don't get that one, and the players they sent over were better than the expected draft picks, so...

Maybe they're just planning to flip him in July, and hope to do better then? Of course, you don't usually get much in the way of MLB-ready talent in July trades, so unless they can get really good prospects from a competitive team, seems like a bust...

I imagine they will find a taker for him. There's always some team on the fringe of contention that wouldn't mind renting a player for 2 months to make a playoff run.

Just read that Twins pitcher Pat Neshek will be out for the entire 2009 season. The Twins middle relief situation just went from bad to worse.

Kind of surprised San Diego let Trevor Hoffman go. I guess he is getting up there in age, though. He's wasn't the closer he once was.

The Rocks weren't going to re-sign him. I surprised they traded now, but they may have gotten the highest value for him.

Isn't he a Boras client?

Let me guess, Tommy John surgery?

The three most dreaded words in baseball: Dr. James Andrews.

Insert your four letter word of choice.

If I were a betting man, I'd say they're probably going to bring up Mulvey or Humber to be the fifth starter and move Perkins or Slowey to long relief just on the assumption that Mulvey and Humber are better starter material, and the Twins really need to show something for the Santana trade.

Other than that, they'll just have to pray Crain or Guerrier can show a bit more than they did this past season and then , of course, bring in anyone they can. Then make Reyes the regular set-up guy.

So the bullpen would look something like this:

Perkins
New Guy
Crain
Breslow
Reyes
Nathan

And hope for the best.

Look the Giants signed a reliever, quick get those playoff tickets.....

4 million a year for a one inning left handed setup guy. If you have a left handed kid you should have them out there working on their fastball....

Four years, $52 million for Ryan Dempster to return to the Cubs.

Well, Kyle Lohse no longer has the most insane contract in the NL Central.
