Let’s see “monster maroon” the kelvin Star Trek 4

My point is that the list of items is basically a "Greatest Hits" list from the TOS films.

With due respect, I don't want that from the next Kelvin film. I don't want monster maroons, or any variant of the costuming there. In short, I want them to do something new.

And with all due respect, they have already used the TMP admiral uniform in Into Darkness as a duty uniform for Admiral Marcus, and a variant of that as a formal uniform for Pike. Looking at your concept art above, you intend for the TMP admiral uniform to be solely formal wear alongside the rest of its variants, when its much more likely the variants will also be duty wear if they don’t go with the maroons.

And I like all of the uniforms that they came up with in all of the Kelvin movies. But its also clear that TPTB like relying on nostalgia. And DIS has already indicated that the TNG S1-2 uniforms were worn in the Kelvin timeline. The Kelvin universe is pretty much expected to, at least when it comes to Starfleet uniforms, run parallel to the prime timeline.

If they are going to do that, then it makes sense to take the “greatest hits” and remix them to create a new experience. And that means skipping over the TMP uniforms – at least for the main cast – and heading straight for the maroons.

Kirk wearing the vest while in the captain’s chair would be a nice spin; we never actually saw that in the TOS movies, as it was first introduced in GEN. Maybe the entire crew wears vests, because it was always an option to wear and we just never saw it. And the senior staff, like admirals, also get to wear bomber jackets because they are of senior rank. It would be different to see Carol Marcus in the maroons, instead of a modernised version of her TWOK white & mustard uniform. There's even leeway to pull a Discovery and have both the TMP uniforms and the maroons in service side by side; TMP uniforms for outposts & Starfleet HQ, and maroon unforms for starship crews.

I'm a big fan of those uniforms but for me I really like the Kelvin Universe playing up it's own identity. In production time the TWOK uniforms lasted from 1982 til 1994 so I'd be totally happy if the Kelvin guys are just wearing the Beyond uniform in a new film or show.

No, Discovery didn't. It had a picture of temporal soldier in a TNG uniform who was from the Kelvin universe. There is no indication that his uniform is from that timeline. That's an assumption.

The Kelvin timeline may have operated under that assumption, but that's a terrible one. Going for nostalgia is what SNW is doing. Kelvin can be bold.

Exactly. It needs to do something different and unique rather than repeat past hits. The biggest complaint about ID is that they immediately went back to Khan. Now, it's considered a positive? No thanks.

I would say that when it comes to something new, it begins and ends with the story. Nothing else – setting, characters, outfits, etc – can matter without it.

I don't think there's any danger of them straight up repeating costume designs from the original film series and I wouldn't want them to. Uniforms are one of the landmarks that lets you know where you are in the Star Trek universe, and a character wearing a monster maroon uniform lets you know immediately they're from the Prime Timeline movie era.

But putting the characters in an imaginative new costume that takes some inspiration from the Star Trek II uniform would help make sure they have a Starfleet style, give us a feeling of what time period they're in, and make the Kelvin movies look different to SNW. Probably a good idea not to make them as hot and bulky though.

Just go with the bomber jacket-style variant that Scotty and Kirk wore for a bit. Make that the new standard uniform of the era and have the wraparound jacket version be the dress uniform. Of course they'd be updated a little, but that's the general idea.

For a second I thought you meant the TOS green wraparound and you were suggesting some kind of Casual Friday Starfleet thing.

Not that, but the "monster maroons" jacket is still a wraparound affair all the same, with the belt and shoulder clasp holding everything in place.
Well, I looked up Monster Maroon redesign and found this: https://www.volantedesign.us/products/starfleet-2293-mens
Yeah I'm not a big fan of any of their designs.

Ladies and gentlemen, these are fine classic examples of how not to do it.

Seems I'm in the minority that a) love the maroons and b) would like to see a Kelvin take on them.

Why not? It's just window dressing at the end of the day. Fan service you might say. It's the story that's the really important thing.
