Kira and Dukat

Kira would have never let her guard down enough to consider Dukat anything more than an occasional ally that could be trusted at an arm's length. Even the most imaginative of writers would've had a hard time making this believable.

Glad they didn't take that route anyway. DS9, great as it was, sometimes veered a bit towards the "soapy" side for my tastes already.

Serial television was still a novelty at that point. Arguably, uncharted territory without veering into, as you say, soapy. I totally agree they were right to not go that direction, but you have to respect their willingness to even consider it. That takes some serious brass.
