Do yourselves a favour and don't check out the boycott Star Wars hashtag.

Re: JJ FUCKED STAR TREK UP AND WILL FUCK UP STAR WARS TOO

I was gonna go out and shoot me an Endorian chicken ( tip-yip) fer dinner, with my God-And-Constitution Given E-11 Blaster Rifle, but the sunset flashed a lens flare in my laser sight, and I missed the varmint, so I am gonna have to settle for the "Emperor's Chicken Death Star Combo with Rebel Fries and an Extra-Large Diet Ice Blaster.

Re: JJ FUCKED STAR TREK UP AND WILL FUCK UP STAR WARS TOO

You do realize lens flares really do happen, watch some NASA video from space. Or watch A New Hope again, when the Falcon comes to help Luke. Lens Flare happens there too. Was that ruined as well?
Lens flare in any film admits there is a camera present, breaking the fourth wall almost as badly as when the camera sees itself in a mirror (or door knob in The Matrix). An exception would be when video is a participant in the movie, such as characters watching a video feed from their own in-scene camera and experiencing lens flares through it.

And yes, lens flare, though hopefully not overindulged, would be indicative of JJ's predilection for flare even when self-destructive, expressing like drugs to JJ's unhealthy addiction to it, rendering it not so much art as compulsion. I hope he's had therapy to get it under control.

When I am watching a movie, I usually am aware that there is a camera present.

God, I hate how Abrams went back in time and inserted lens flares into TMP. Don't believe me? Look at every energy ball that V'Ger ever fired! Wake up, sheeple!

Re: JJ FUCKED STAR TREK UP AND WILL FUCK UP STAR WARS TOO

This thread has lasted -a lot- longer than I would have suspected.

One has to admit that J.J.'s use of lens flares in the Star Trek ('09) was a bit much. Behind the scenes footage shows stage hands actually aiming lights into the camera to generate the flares. The lighting and flares, I feel, took away from the movie. Not much, but it certainly had an impact. I remember seeing an early photo of the '09 bridge and it nice and subtly lit and it looked warm, natural, and subdued. It looked a lot like a modern version of the actual TOS bridge. Then in the movie itself it's over lit and so bright it's causing lens flares. (The future's so bright I have to wear shades, indeed.)

I don't really recall them being an issue in ITD.

Can't say the use of them seemed over-done in this trailer, and when they're used (in the OP post) makes a degree of sense other than where in ST09 where there's flares just by looking at two people talking to one another in a bright room.

Lens flares can be an effective technique in film making, seen it used nicely plenty of times. ST09 went overboard.

From what we've seen in this trailer, I don't think ST09 will have the same issues.

Re: JJ FUCKED STAR TREK UP AND WILL FUCK UP STAR WARS TOO

JJ made Star Trek, which was a completely dead franchise, relevant again. JJTrek actually makes money because of its broader appeal. So I say "Thank you, JJ. You're awesome."

That's an absurd statement. The two things are in no way similar - one is a choice, the other is an error. Lens flare and lens reflections can be found in myriad classic films throughout the history of the medium. They no more "break the fourth wall" than does the fact that the viewer's POV shifts suddenly from one angle to another on a scene and then jumps suddenly from one location to another (that's called "cutting;" it's part of something called "film editing.").

Re: JJ FUCKED STAR TREK UP AND WILL FUCK UP STAR WARS TOO

Eh, I had no problem with the lens flares in the Trek movies at all. I thought they did a great job conveying the idea that this was a super advanced, highly technological world of the future we were watching. And it made the Enterprise look and feel like this almost magical kind of place, which I'm sure was the main feeling Abrams was going for with that.

Re: JJ FUCKED STAR TREK UP AND WILL FUCK UP STAR WARS TOO

Based on the fan reaction to the trailer yesterday, and that people crashed their website trying to buy advance tickets, the early indications are that very, very few people care about lens flares.

Disney has had a tough year with some stinkers - notably Tomorrowland - they must be jumping for joy on the early reactions to this film.

BTW - what is JJ planning to do after Wars? It will be hard to top this.

Re: JJ FUCKED STAR TREK UP AND WILL FUCK UP STAR WARS TOO

He better lens-flare the fuck out of that bullwhip.

Re: JJ FUCKED STAR TREK UP AND WILL FUCK UP STAR WARS TOO

Nice. Another two months of cry baby bullshit from the usual suspects.

If Star Trek/Star Wars by Abrams isn't for someone, then there are plenty of other things one can devote their time to. Life is short, allow people to enjoy the things they want to enjoy in peace (within reason).

Re: JJ FUCKED STAR TREK UP AND WILL FUCK UP STAR WARS TOO

breaking the fourth wall almost as badly as when the camera sees itself in a mirror
Even this can sometimes be intentional, as in Body Double, during the "Relax" music video sequence.

Re: JJ FUCKED STAR TREK UP AND WILL FUCK UP STAR WARS TOO

I was on the fence, but the all caps in the title convinced me.
