Is saying "it has been an honour to serve with you" naval tradition?

It seems when all of the characters cease a tour of duty or posting they usually say:

"It has been an honour to serve with you."
"The honour is all mine."

Is this naval tradition?

It's probably not an explicit tradition, but rather good manners and good sense.

In much the same as you'd say "been good working for you, best of luck in your new job" when someone leaves your workplace. One never knows when one'll have to work with that person again, or will try to get a job for them - always a good idea to leave on a cordial setting.

Plus people in StarTrek are always exceptional, so it *would* be an honour to serve with them.

Personally, I think it's an old farewell saying between all servicemen (and servicewomen), regardless of what branch of service they're actually in.

Nine year military veteran. danellis has it right. It's not a set in stone tradition, just good manners. I said it often, not from any source of tradition, but from my heart.

it's what locarno said to the surviving members of his nova squad. military honour might be prone to abuse.
