Interesting vid on the Skant Uniform.

Who do people think they're kilting when saying skants can't be worn by everyone? (LeVar wearing one for an episode would have been better than his attempt to out-beard the Riker!)

What about the 9 O'clock shadow, that's a look in itself.

So under-rated.

But I do love Rebecca Romijin's take on the skant in SNW.

She wears it with Black legging / Yoga Pants and it looks great IMO.

But Rebecca has always looked great no matter what she does, and at any age.

I've always been a fan of Rebecca Romijin.

They should have had a beard-out episode: Worf, Riker, Geordi, Data, and Picard all have beards. They all had them in certain episodes.

Because it's a scifi series, why not have bearded ladies too, Beverly and Deanna with beards?

Junkball Media's always an instant click for me whenever he uploads; there's so much interesting new information he manages to find - even for a 'seasoned :ouch:' fan like myself.

I love that they tried the skants as a uniform variation in early TNG. As much as the later seasons were generally higher quality, there is something more vibrant about those early seasons imo. I can't quite put my finger on it, maybe it's something to do with how they were leaning harder into the concept that humanity was culturally quite different in the future (as you would expect after several centuries), and that was reflected in all kinds of things including types of clothing. Doesn't even have to be about sexuality necessarily, just the gradual shift of fashions. No doubt our clothing would look very strange to, say, a medieval to early-modern European nobleman. For them, trousers as we understand them wouldn't be very familiar, however dresses for younger boys were, and then breeches were worn later.

I don't know if TNG would've been a success if the cast were wearing skants, but I'm glad they're there at all. It was the sort of thing they did in early TNG that made me feel like I was looking at a culture that was somewhat different from my everyday experience back when I was first watching TNG. And I find it fascinating to see similar such clothing items being more commonplace for various reasons as time goes on.

You know, I'm thinking one could argue that Pulaski is always on duty in a dress uniform, which is basically just a long sleeve skant worn with pants.

I wonder, how much does Starfleet or a captain of a certain ship control what the crew wears on duty or might some ships have a policy that wear something Starfleet related, that's enough.

We know that at least Jellico was a bit particular what the bridge crew wore.

It seems like Picard is pretty lax about variation. Selar & Ogawa are the only blue suits, with a name we know, that wear standard blues. Bev's got an overcoat. Pulaski has a slant combo or even maybe a dress uniform top. Troi was all over the place until Jellico. Worf & Ro get cultural adornments, & everybody switched over from overalls to tops & bottoms.

Picard himself even opts for some jackets. I even remember Ro having a neat undershirt deal in her first episode when she gave a little girl her top.

I don't remember seeing that much variation on Voyager or even DS9 among the Starfleet personnel. I bet plenty of posts expect uniformity, whatever the going variant is

Edit: Hey! I just remembered that Ogawa was pregnant for a bit & had some looser variant too

Rebecca Romjin is a gorram supermodel no matter what she puts on. It's like she can't even help it.

It's kind of a shame the skants were abandoned so early on, they're a cool and interesting idea IMO. For all that Star Trek is ~forward thinking~ i guess the idea of guys in dresses was in the 80s (and still is!) too socially unacceptable for a general audience to accept.

B'Elanna's "engineering jacket" (due to Roxanne's pregnancy) was the only major variation among uniformed officers on Voyager, and maybe Seven's outfits IIRC.

For DS9, there's O'Brien's rolled up sleeves, Worf's sash (carried over from TNG), Rom and Nog's "head skirt" are definitely explicit variations, and Kira's mid-series red catsuit (which was exclusive to her) and lilac dress uniform are implicit variations, as is Odo's uniform jacket.
