HS wrestler wimps out, won't wrestle girl

Would it really be any different if the issue was race and not gender? I seem to remember this being a problem after Jackie Robinson made the major leagues (at least one team threatened to strike over that). Would it have been so principled for opposing teams to refuse to play against a team which had a black player?

SO I guess you would be cool with a man fighting a woman in a 3round, 5 minute, cage fight UFC style?

Basically what I'm getting here is that a bunch of people are in favor of watching men beat up women, am I wrong? This certainly isn't "sparring" in karate or something, this is competitive combat sport. And if you are ok with wrestling than I assume you are ok with caged fights were people get concussed and broken bones frequently.

Someone once said something to the effect that, "when someone acts out of conscience, all others should shut up."
Well, that absolves people of everything. I'll never understand this line of defence: "he did what he thought was right". So nobody should criticize him, even if people think what he did was patronizing and disrespectful? Does not compute.

The problem with all the scenarios put forth by those who disagree with the young man's decision... is that they are flawed.
 Well, that settles it. I guess we should all go home now.

This boy has been taught a set of values by his family. Every parent who has taught their kids NOT to give in to outside pressure from peers, adults, etc. should understand his perspective.
Sure. Some parents teach their kids a lot of bullshit, too.

As males, we are taught to never raise a hand to a female, even if they hit us. Now that this young man has done as he was taught, people condemn him.
If people can't see the difference between physical abuse and sport wresting, I am very sorry for them.

I applaud the young man for staying true to his convictions, even when it could have cost him what he wanted most. Especially in an age when many youth are giving in to the temptation to use drugs, smoke, have sex too early, steal, commit violent acts and more, because people want them to betray the positive values they were taught.
Again,. He defaulted on a sport match because he didn't think boys and girls should play sports together, and no he's a paragon of Middle America against drugs, booze, violence and sex.

Is this a joke? I would almost assume that one of the motivations for making it so would be the titillation factor.
Yeah, because watching 14-years old boys and girls wrestle is so titillating.

What I find extremely weird about all this is that people seem unable to think about wrestling without sexual overtones. I am fascinated by women's boobies as the next guy, but there is something beyond that, you know.

I don't watch that kind of thing, but if both participants are OK with it, and it's legal, then what's the problem?

Basically what I'm getting here is that a bunch of people are in favor of watching men beat up women, am I wrong? This certainly isn't "sparring" in karate or something, this is competitive combat sport.

Sport is not beating people up. The former is normal, recognized competition, the latter is nothing but violence. Wrestling is sport. It *is* sparring.

As for that mixed martial arts/cage match stuff: I'm hesitant to call that a sport, but I guess it is, since it is apparently recognized as a sport. Isn't it?

acknowledging that there are gender differences is not "sexism," it is reality.

there's a reason why almost every sport is separated into men's and women's leagues.

If you object to unisex bathrooms and showers in locker rooms, does that make you sexist?

people should really think through the kinds of arguments they make.

. . . basketball, baseball, etc. which are mostly non-contact sports are gender-segregated.

Yet of all sports, WRESTLING, a highly physical-contact-oriented sport, is open for men and women to play together-for HIGH-SCHOOL students, no less . . . This would make me VERY uncomfortable if I were a wrestler, and the kids should not be put in this position.
What I find extremely weird about all this is that people seem unable to think about wrestling without sexual overtones.
Yes, wrestling is different from other sports -- even other one-on-one combat sports like fencing or the martial arts. It consists of pretty much constant intimate physical contact. For young, healthy adolescents with raging hormones, I imagine it’s rather difficult to avoid sexual overtones.

No one mentioned to this kid that he was in an organization that included girls, or is he just dumb?

This is the first time that girls have ever qualified to be in the tournament, so I would wager no one told him before now because it was a moot point.

Since when are there mixed wrestling tournaments? Do we also have mixed boxing, martial arts and ultimate fighting?

It would really helps if people read the arguments that are made, too, instead of making them up for the sake of building strawmen. Nobody claimed that some competitions shouldn't be separated into different categories (even if I think the classification should be weight and body strength, not gender). I don't want to see a boxing match between a man and a woman any more than I want to see a match between a welterweight and a heavyweight. You are right, men and women are different. But the shape of their genitalia has nothing to do with their ability to engage in sports.

The issue here is that the kid entered a mixed-gender competition, and then refused to engage one opponent because of her gender. Pretty simple.

First the excuse was "honour", then it was "faith", and now it's just ignorance. I guess we are getting closer to the truth with every interaction.

No it's not. This is the first year EVER that girls had qualified for the event. I highly doubt that he was aware there was even a chance that he'd he facing any girls in the tournament. I bet the idea never even crossed his mind.

I'm not exactly sure how "ignorance" does away with the "honor" or "faith" aspect. You might want to re-examine your logic.

My wife and I humped like rabid bunnies in the shower yesterday. I promote equality and the buddy system in all such endeavors.

Lesson of the day? Never enter a competition without reading all the rules. Kirk learned it the hard way on Amok Time, and so did this kid. ;)

Did you hear that whooshing sound? Must have been something going right over your head.

Well, there's always the possibly that a meteorite may strike me in the forehead the moment I walk out the front door, but I'm not really going to structure my day around the possibility. If it did happen, I wouldn't expect a bunch of people to mock my widow for mourning my loss since obviously, I should have known the risks.

^ But this is wrestling we're talking about. Aggression is normal. If it's so unusual for boys to wrestle girls, why is it even allowed at all?
Because the constitution gives everybody a right to participate in what this country has to offer, including girls.

^........... Please tell me you did not just compare a kid who doesn't want to wrestle a girl because he feels it's inappropriate to someone who shoots another person.

He didn't, he used an analogy to demonstrate the concept that following one's conscience isn't an innately laudable act.

Why is it such devices are lost on so many people?
