Houston becomes the largest city to elect openly gay mayor?

I wouldn't vote for anyone who openly admitted to not liking Queen.

It's just not right.

Well, I wouldn't vote for a puppy, even if they did like Queen.

Same.

Now it was a kitten that liked Rush, on the other hand... ;)

Seriously, though, good on Houston. I'm with John in that I wish this was no big deal, but for now, at least, it is. Ottawa had a chance to do the same in our last municipal election, but unfortunately we elected Lex Luthor instead.

I'll just skip the part about you being, well, the usual you, and I focus on the bolded part: would you prefer that they lie (or be silent) about their sexual orientation?
I consider the homosexual lifestyle to be immoral. If they choose to make that public they will not get my vote. Aren't there deal breakers for you in terms of voting for someone? Well for me it's a lot more than just politics.
So, to answer my question: yes, you would prefer that they would lie. Ok.

No, that's actually not what I would prefer. Again, I'm not saying all this to cause a problem. I'm saying it because I feel compelled to speak out against it. I understand a lot of people don't like it but I'd feel worse if I said nothing.

To be fair, there are things that would trump all other issues for me, too. As it happens, homosexuality isn't one of them, but there are moral issues that, even if they weren't directly related to the job at hand, they would cause me to say to myself, "I just don't want to give this person a job." Not saying it's right, but it's how I feel.

Of course it doesn't.

Seems you are unaware of what's called "The Gay Agenda". Their master plan is to make everyone else gay. I'm surprised you've never heard about it.

John, what stinks is that you can be a decent guy when you want to be, yet you don't seem to be cool with someone having a differing opinion on this. Too bad.

I will agree with you that there is a gay agenda though. Slightly different than you described but it exists nonetheless.

***Oh, seeing as it's Festivus Season, care to start the Airing Of Grievances?

Perpetual, unrepentant sin does. Which is how I view this. I'd feel the same if the person was a serial adulterer and said they planned on continuing to be one.
I thought God reserved the right to determine what did and did not constitute perpetual, unrepentant sin. Do you place your judgment about His?

He makes the ultimate call regarding all of us. However, I'm not going to reward someone who promotes homosexuality with my vote. Ever. As a Christian AND as a citizen that's my right.

In what way was this woman promoting homosexuality -- oh, and what exactly is "The Gay Agenda"?

Of course it doesn't. But I'd imagine that what we'd each consider to be moral differs somewhat.

And yet you think your "morals" are superior to the morals of others. Therein lies the irony.

Not at all, JP. However, when I sin against God I ask for forgiveness and try my best to correct my behaviour. That's the difference.
You should ask for forgiveness for adding Us where they don't belong like a filthy Canadian. What sort of American are you? :(

A serial adulterer is hurting his spouse. Who is a monogamous homosexual hurting? Why should someone's sexual orientation prevent them from holding a secular office? Shouldn't you strive NOT to judge someone?

In my opinion (and perhaps not yours) homosexuality hurts the moral fabric of our society.

I never said it should prevent someone from holding office. you are more than welcome to vote for a homosexual if you wish, That's your right and I respect it.

In an election we are each weighing the plusses and minuses of a candidate and some things weigh more heavily. Hence, no vote from me.

More or less than divorce?
More or less than battered/abused children?
More or less than parents who neglect their children?
More or less than people who live together?

There is strong evidence that King David was bi at the very least.

Yet he was especially loved by God and chosen specifically by God to be King. It's all in the bible.

So it seems like God doesn't have any real problem with man/man relationships or with a homosexual being a politician.

Of course something being in the bible means nothing to me, but I imagine it would mean something to you TLS.

However you seem to have one set of guidelines for yourself, and another for homosexuals. Christ specifically said not to judge, and yet you do so perpetually. You are unrepentant for doing so. Isn't that hypocritical?

I'm tempted to go to England, pick up a certain cute lil transgirl, come back to the states, and run for office with her as my first lady, just to see how Squire votes. :bolian:

And I want to know how homosexuality wrecks a moral fiber? :vulcan:

And Squire, I do find it ironic you talk about morality, yet having a Bush and Satan, er, Cheney sign as your avatar. :D

I love the sarcasm some of the supposedly "tolerant" folks show when a differing opinion is voiced.

I did get a kick out of the love for Cheney though.
