Harry Kim's Reprimand in 'The Disease'

Joel_Kirk

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
For those of you keeping up with sfdebris' reviews on Youtube, he did bring up an interesting point:

From Kirk to Riker...to Hoshi Sato...to Julian Bashir...to Ben Sisko...to Jake Sisko, who isn't even an officer (and possibly other characters) there never has been a rule that officers cannot have sex with aliens. However, Janeway reprimands Kim on his actions...

There is even the question of 'aliens' having sex with 'aliens' (Jadzia and Worf) and the fact that the humans may be considered 'aliens' to non-human races...

There is the sudden idea that an officer has to go through red-tape in order to have relations....something that hasn't been brought up in the series before then...and didn't show up even in ENT.

Yet another reason why Janeway was a terrible captain. The review was excellent though and you know I felt sorry for Harry, if only for the logic of plot which necessitated him to be in future episodes, anyone in his position would have told Janeway where to stuff it and would have left starfleet. Which is why it deserved a 3.

Yea I hated that part of that episode. Maybe she reprimanded him because if she wasnt getting any she would not let anyone else get some. Too bad i wasn't aboard could have remedied her situation!

You all do remember that the aliens in question, the Varro had strong social taboos as a culture bordering on xenophobia which were collectively binding despite the rebellious sexualosity of individual malcontent... And I think I head that it's more about only doing it with aliens on the "approved" list than aliens et al. I beleive it took weeks of dialogue before Voyagers crewmen were allowed aboard the aliens ship for their "cultural exchange".

That hussy was bomb laying rebel scum but if her cooch is still worth talking about after he shatter a civilization and wrecked their star ship in a bid for insurrection and independence (Thus retroactively decriminalizing Kim's Coitus.) we can see that every one here is aware of priorities.

I'm wondering about the Deltan Sex oath right now.

Which just goes to show....

Janeway f'ing HATED Harry. SFDebris notes the very casual way she shrugs off Chakotay's accusation that her punishment was unusually harsh. She just doesn't care...seriously.

Harsh?

If I were Captain, I would have given him the option between chemical castration or a duranium chastity belt for any further away missions he might go on and wave his tackle in the faces of any number of strains of the cosmic clap.

Although Chakotay did the same thing in Forgettable.

I don't remember - was that Original Harry, or the one from the other universe, who crossed over with baby Naomi in the episode where Original Harry was killed?

The disease (5.17) was at least three years after deadlock (2.17 - Oh? That's odd, both shows the 17th episode of a season.). You'll note that this was the episode where Naomi was born twice, not that you'd want Scarlet running around an episode all about Kim doing it without protection with some space slapper... Although that was a generational ship full of children, which makes Janeway a mean bastard not to arranging a play date, which would have been cancelled and all subsequent playdates would have been suspended all because Harry couldn't keep it in his pants, which would have been an amazing conversation to listen to as Naomi asks (berates) Harry if he's proud of himself and if it was worth it because he's snotpooh in her eyes from this moment forever for ruining, nay: ANNIHILATING the first friendships she'd had with people her own height ever, all sold out for whatever this sex thingymajig is that everyone is talking about.

Janeway: "There's a reason you took a semester of interspecies protocol at the Academy. There's also a reason why the Handbook on Personal Relationships is three centimetres thick."
Kim: "All Starfleet personnel must obtain authorisation from their C.O. as well as clearance from their medical officer before initiating an intimate relationship with an alien species."

The prosecution's opening statement suggests that the issue is very complicated and leaves open the possibility that Kim stumbled onto a rare special case.

However, the defense undermines his case right away by quoting a very general rule that refers to generic "alien species"... The possibility of a blacklist appears remote, then.

It might of course be that our heroes regularly do obtain authorization from their superiors and their CMO. Kirk could have gotten a free pass from McCoy any day, and it would probably have been a 30-day pass at the very least, not a case-by-case one... And commanding officers might have permanent permission to engage in alien sex for the cause of diplomacy.

Yeah, Janeway was pretty mean in that episode....

I think Janeway was so difficult on Kim was due to the fact that she barely got the Varo to cooperate for one thing, and she knew they were quite xenophobic.

Also, the rule in question that Kim apparently violated, is probably not usually applied in the Alpha Quadrant where most of the species are well known and likely mating doesn't pose a potential threat.
In the case of the Varo ... they were extremely xenophobic and confrontational, not to mention quite dissimilar internally from most humanoid cultures and a new alien race, so it's not surprising that she would act like this with Harry.

Also, one of the potential reasons she was behaving like this, is possibly because she perceives him as sort of an adoptive son?

^^
That's an idea...;)

Good post...

She was just Sexual Frustrated. See my other post. As i said too bad I wasnt aboard, I could have just lived on the ship and done the Captain for an hour or so every couple of days. I have always liked Women in power!

I think there's evidence for the idea that Janeway really disliked Harry, actually. At least, the way Mulgrew played it, it often came off that way.

:guffaw:

If that was true, it's sad that Kim couldn't file any complaints since they were in the middle of nowhere.

Even if he did file a complaint, it would have been an uphill battles since Janeway eventually became an Admiral, and probably had pull even before her promotion...

What's to like about him?

Don't be mean, dude....;)

I hated that ep... That thing about 'no sex between aliens' contradicted every previous ep of Trek, especially Kirk in TOS! LOL!

I still remember the ad.

The American ad that was on the ass end of a boot leg tape for something else, probably a Babylon 5 movie that got mailed half way across the earth to me...

There a scene of Harry looking goofy in front of that girl, then the tv screen lights up with the legend and simultaneous voiceover [pigs in space voice]LUST IN SPACE!!![/pigs in space voice.] ...[1940s newsreel voice] What is Ensign Kim to do! Chosing between loyalty to his ship and the love of his life!!![/1940s newsreel voice] tune in tot he new voyager to find out. Only on UPN.

I was amazed at the baldfaceded misdirection because I had already seen the episode, and I knew that was just spin. This was further made manifest as I watched an ad for space above and beyond and I thought : "hey that looks good, I really should wa... " I stopped myself because Space above and beyond had already been cancelled and I knew every episode was complete bollocks.

American Madmen are dirty rotten scoundrels.

Yeah, they even made Don't Mess With the Zohan appear funny in previews.

Those bastards.
